Job Summary

The Neurology Department, Michigan Medicine, is seeking a Sr. Administrative Manager to lead the research administration of its well-funded ($14M NIH, $20M total funding) and productive research program by providing leadership to the grant pre and post-award professionals as well as the clinical trials professionals supporting the research work of the Neurology faculty.  Additional related responsibilities and projects assigned throughout the year.


Engage and advise the faculty on the most effective courses of action in submission of proposals and management of awards.  Collaborates with the department’s budget & finance team, faculty and staff human resources & compensation leads.

Provide leadership support and supervision to the Department’s pre and post-award administrators as well as the Clinical Trials Manager and Clinical Coordinators and Administrative Specialist.

Direct integration and alignment of department clinical research support and processes with Neuroscience and Sensory Clinical Trials Support Unit (NSS CTSU).

Serve as a principal liaison for matters of research outside the department as assigned; attend pertinent meetings (departmental, Medical School, University, or national organization) including GPAC and PAAC. 

Related special projects as assigned.

Will receive direct supervision from the Chief Department Administrator as well as functional supervision from the Chair, the Associate Chair for Research and the faculty lead for clinical research.

Required Qualifications*

  • Must have demonstrated experience and ability to effectively partner with research leadership, principle investigators, research coordinators and other stakeholders.
  • Significant experience with NIH and other sponsored research pre-and post-award sponsored research accounting, grants, contracts and clinical research project administration and management in an academic medical center
  • Significant experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial management and reporting requirements.
  • Effective leadership, program management, team-building, human resources, training, organizational and supervisory experience required.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills for a diverse work environment required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical trials including budgeting, billing, UM research policies and procedures and continuous process improvement.
  • Experience implementing new enterprise-wide management systems, tools and staffing models desired.

Senior Level Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or healthcare administration, finance or related field.
  • 5-7 progressively responsible experience in research administration management.

Intermediate Level Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or healthcare administration, finance or related field.
  • 4-6 progressively responsible experience in research administration management.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • CRA certification
  • Five or more years of experience managing a significant number of staff (5-10 or more)
  • Experienced with M-Pathways, Business Objects and other reporting and management tools
