A postdoctoral position is available to design, develop and create functional data analysis (FDA) methods to study the coordination of jaw, tongue and hyoid movements in 8 mammal species. Data are being created as time series derived from an advanced X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology (XROMM) system (see www.xromm.org). The fellow will participate in developing scripts and new methods to reduce, compare and interpret time series in ways that will revolutionize and standardize how movements are depicted and analyzed. The project will contribute to the Feeding Experiments End-User Database (https://www.feedexp.org/) and to the growing field of biological digital databases (https://www.idigbio.org/).
The fellow will work closely with faculty in the University of Michigan Department of Statistics and School of Dentistry, to catalyze statistical method development for use in comparative motor behavioral studies.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Statistics, Biology or equivalent field and have adept skills using functional data analysis methods, ideally in the R language and environment. Some familiarity with movement sciences, motor control, comparative anatomy or functional morphology would be useful but not required. Applicants must also possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent attention to detail, excellent ability to multitask and excellent organizational skills. An excellent attendance record is required.
