The University of Michigan-Flint serves over 8,500 learners and offers degrees in over 129 under-graduate and 63 graduate possible majors, concentrations and specializations, including a doctor of nursing practice and doctor of physical therapy. The University also offers programs in liberal arts and sciences, elementary or secondary education, health care, and business. The academic campus community is comprised of over 550 faculty members.

One of three campuses of the University of Michigan, UM-Flint's development in recent years has paralleled that of its host city. Flint, population approximately 100,000 located about 60 miles north of Detroit, is in the midst of a similarly profound transformation. Although the city is best known as the birthplace of General Motors, shifts in industry have caused the area to become better known for its educational opportunities, cultural centers, medical facilities, shopping centers, and recreational activities. Visitors who return to the city after several years are amazed at the ongoing transformation, and UM-Flint has played a central role in the progress the city has made.

Position Description:

Under the general direction of the Director of the Library and International Education: The Associate Director will lead in establishing, developing, and managing a signature UM-Flint Center – a Center for International Education – open to all UM-Flint students, offering academically-coordinated study-abroad learning opportunities. This Academic Affairs-based and -directed Center would organize and coordinate for students an integrated program of formal coursework (in, e.g., history, language, culture), international experience, and experiential learning opportunities (e.g., internships, research, service projects, reflective essay), with the objective of broadening and deepening student perspectives and sharpening intellectual and practical skills to prepare them for business, professional, and civic leadership.

Responsibilities*

In furtherance of that overarching objective, the Associate Director will, with general supervision of the Director of the Library and International Education:

  • With faculty, develop an integrated program of instruction, international experience opportunities, and experiential learning opportunities to support student integrated learning experiences.
  • Manage and negotiate a core of international institutional partnerships, including key strategic partnerships, to support a variety of academic study-abroad opportunities for students and research/teaching exchange opportunities for faculty.
  • Work collaboratively with UM-Flint academic units to develop existing and new student-exchange and study-abroad opportunities, including international 2+2, joint degree, transfer agreements, and dual degree programs, as well as joint faculty research & teaching exchange opportunities.
  • In coordination with units such as the Career Center and the College and Schools, identify and negotiate international or internationally-related internship opportunities, including developing a program of business-culture and general cultural-awareness workshops/courses for students and faculty.
  • Organize and manage delegation visits from and to partner institutions in support of student and faculty exchange goals.
  • Collaborate with the UM-Flint and UM-Ann Arbor Offices of Development and the UM-Flint Office of Research in identifying and cultivating corporate and individual donors, grant opportunities, and related support entities (such as the Fulbright Program, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), or the Midwest German-American Chamber of Commerce and its related German counterparts), to build student and faculty scholarship and travel funding, including collaborative grant-writing, and budget planning to support the developing Center.
  • Initial core exchange/study abroad partnership will be Bergische Universitaet Wuppertal (BUW), Germany, with which we will expand our existing relationship, followed by to-be-developed partnerships with other German university partners, with universities in Spain (especially Barcelona-area), the United Kingdom (London), Italy (Rome), and possibly other European Union countries.
 

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree, or European equivalent (business-focus preferred);
  • More than 5 years demonstrated experience establishing & managing international academic exchange programs/projects;
  • Demonstrated and proven communication, interpersonal, teamwork, & intercultural skills;
  • Demonstrated facility in verbal & written English and German (plus Spanish preferred);
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with faculty and administrators; as well as in team settings.
  • Working understanding with American & German higher education systems (plus Spanish preferred);
  • Demonstrated experience effectively managing resources and budgets
  • Fundraising and development experience
  • Must have the ability to work in Germany and other international locations described above
  • Work with the Director of the Library and International Education to develop and establish the new Center for International Education

Additional Information

Funding for this position is currently in place for three years with probable additional funding beyond this three-year period.
