Job Summary

The Program Director at the University of Michigan-Flint’s Cummings Great Expectations, in collaboration with the Central Administrator, Center staff and participating families, provides an early care and education program that supports excellence in learning. The Program Director is responsible for assuring that the program’s curriculum and teaching are carried out in accordance with the Center’s philosophy, provides support and guidance in documentation for Child Care Licensing and National Accreditation, provides classroom support for staff working with children who have special needs and provides support to the Central Administrator as assigned.


DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (duties are not listed in priority order):

  • Uphold the Mission Statement and Philosophy of the Early Childhood Programs and UM-Flint.
  • Implement short and long-range program goals and objectives.
  • Implement and recommend new policies and procedures.
  • Input and review the Family Handbook annually.
  • Input and review the Staff Handbook annually.
  • Assist with coordinating a marketing plan and supervise any public relations procedures.


PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITES (duties are not listed in priority order):

  1. Children’s Program
  • Ensure that the program follows the licensing requirements mandated by the Michigan Department of Human Services.
  • Ensure the program follows Accreditation with the National Association for the Education of Young Children and update information annually.
  • Update and manage individual site’s participation in the Quality Rating and Improvement System through Great Start to Quality.
  • Ensures that all children are being served in a developmentally appropriate manner including seeking community support and funding for our children with special rights.
  • Observe and support classrooms in development of high quality and developmentally appropriate curriculum consistent with the Center’s philosophy of teaching and learning.
  1. Health and Safety
  • Ensures that all programs maintain strict health and safety guidelines for the wellbeing of infant, toddler, preschool and school age children and the adults within.
  • Works closely with Environment Health and Safety, Department of Public Safety and Facilities Management to insure the safe care of children during emergencies.
  • Responsible for crisis management of the center, including all issues that may create a potential liability to the campus.
  1. Family Community Relations
  • Conducts tours of facility to interested individuals and enrolls and conducts orientations for potential families.
  • Establishes rapport with Center families and is available for individual family conferences as needed.
  • Organizes monthly Family Advisory Meetings to create/review Center policies, plan parent education programs, social events and fundraising activities.
  • Maintain a program wide system for student records including admission forms, medical information, dietary restrictions, parental permission notes and attendance records.
  1. Personnel
  • Directly and indirectly supervises full-time employed University staff, temporary employees, student staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Provides positive leadership to staff by clearly expressing organizational values and program standards, maintaining clear channels of communication and soliciting staff input in decision making when appropriate.
  • Monitor and assist in hiring practices and evaluation of professional staff of center annually.
  • Encourages and facilitates the on-going professional staff development program.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and monitors that the teaching teams are meeting regularly.
  • Schedule staff appropriately to maintain classroom ratios.
  • Provides positive leadership to staff by clearly expressing organizational values and program standards, maintaining clear channels of communication and soliciting staff input in decision making when appropriate.
  • Provide support to the Central Administrator of the Center administration and daily operations, including shirts to support the center during all operating hours of 6:30am-6:00pm.
  1. Budget
  • Assist with maintaining the budget of the center.
  • Assist with the management of the purchasing procedures for all expenses incurred.
  • Assist in monitoring grant funding across program.
  1. Space
  • Oversees all aspects of the on-going maintenance of the site at Cummings Great Expectations.  


INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITEI (duties are not listed in priority order):

  • Meets regularly with the Early Childhood Education Department in regards to all aspects of Cummings and Holmes.
  • Collaborates with faculty in developing programs that link research activates with early childhood education practices.
  • Assists interested faculty in the establishment of appropriate research projects at the Center.
  • Helps to coordinates observations and student practicum activities throughout the Center.


DIVISIONAL AND OUTREACH RESPONSIBILITIES (duties are not listed in priority order):

  • Collaborates with other department managers in the delivery of services to students.
  • Collaborates with faculty in developing programs that link research activities with early childhood education practices.
  • Coordinates observations and student practicum activities throughout the center.




Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor Degree with at least 24 hours in early childhood education, child development, elementary education or early childhood special needs and at least 3 credits in administration, leadership or management with the ability to have a total of nine credits in within two years of the hire date.
  • 3 years progressively responsible administrative/supervisory experience preferably in a large childcare center
  • Able to work with young children (infant/toddler and/or preschool) using developmentally appropriate practices in all areas of development.
  • Able to complete paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Has experience in and appreciation of children’s families as partners in education.
  • Can establish and maintain professional relationships with colleagues.
  • Acknowledges recognition of need for modeling best practices of early childhood education or related field.
  • Has knowledge of and experience with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation, including membership and involvement with NAEYC
  • Has Demonstrated ability to connect with community members and service agencies;
  • Demonstrated reliability and dependability

  • Valid Central Registry Check
  • Bloodborne Pathogen Annual Training
  • Maintain membership in Processional Organizations

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master Degree in Early Childhood Education
  • 9+ credits in administration, leadership or management.
  • Experience with Reggio Emilia approach,
  • Experience of documentation of children’s work,
  • Experience with looping and effective staff supervision;
  • Experience working with children with special needs.
