Job Summary


  • The Hall Director for Apartment Life coordinates the community development activities, learning opportunities, emergency crisis response, supervises staff, and assists in addressing facility related issues within the residential community.
  • The Hall Directors provide leadership to the residential operations in a way that maintains positive, multicultural, and learning-centered communities. The Hall Director may supervise a full time Community Center Manager and several paraprofessional student staff in day-to-day operations with residents, collaborates with other building staff in the opening and closing of the buildings, conducts crisis intervention and response which included communication and promotion of University policies and procedures, amongst other responsibilities.


  • Responsible for Programming & Training and Community Center operational budgets averaging $10,500.


Selection, Training, Supervision and Staff Development:

Select, train, supervise, and evaluate 6 - 20 paraprofessional student staff Resident Advisors, in an apartment community housing 200 – 1,300 residents. Coordinate on-going staff training through team building activities, professional development workshops, and other programs. Coordinate weekly staff meetings that update and reinforce training objectives, and intentionally focus on individual and staff development. Collaborate with another Hall Director in the supervision of resident staff with Community Center Manager. Conduct regular one-on-one/group meetings with staff members to deliver the Residence Education Community Development Model. Serve as member of the Residence Education Leadership Team in the supervision of resident student staff, and a full-time Community Center Manager. Develop and facilitate curriculum for the on-going training of paraprofessional student staff. Serve as a facilitator for the “Creating Inclusive Communities” workshop series for all newly hired student staff.

Student Development Educator:

Enhance student learning and development across all Student Life collective impact areas including leadership, diversity, health and wellness, community engagement, and service learning. Assume leadership role in the development of a safe, positive, and welcoming community through programming, service delivery, and assessment activities. Lead residence operations in a way that creates and maintains a positive, multicultural, learner-centered community embracing Residence Education's Community Development Model, Social Justice and Restorative Justice. Promote, encourage, and reward student learning, academic success, and co-curricular participation. Foster an atmosphere of respect for individual differences and community values. Direct staff intervention regarding resident concerns and conflicts. Advise and support Housing student groups. Encourage student safety and security. Communicate and promote University policy and procedures including the Community Living at Michigan (CLAM) and the Housing Student Conflict Resolution process. Support student learning through the student conduct and conflict resolution process.


Co-manage student residences housing 200 – 1,300 residents, collaborating with facilities services, dining services, building security, contracts and assignments, and information technology. Participate in health and safety environmental initiatives with facilities colleagues. Collaborate with other Leadership Team members for move-in and move-out processes. Make recommendations for facility upgrades and room designations. Responsible for Programming & Training and Community Center operational budgets averaging $10,500. Participate in departmental and division-wide committees. Participate and/or lead weekly meetings, including building, resident staff, leadership team, and one-on-one meetings with supervisor.  Prepare periodic and annual reports. Provide resources and referrals for students and family members with questions that may be both personal and academic in nature.

Crisis Response:

Participate in a rotating duty schedule, providing on-call/on-duty emergency and crisis response for students and family members for an area that houses approximately 3,000 students. Provide facilitation for conflict resolution issues, assist students struggling with mental health and personal issues, and refer students to appropriate University and community resources.

Required Qualifications*

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field. Minimum of 1-Year graduate or professional experience in Student Life. 2 years of supervisory experience. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, as well as collaboratively as part of a larger team is necessary. Successful experience facilitating community building in a diverse, multicultural, student learner-centered environment is expected. Demonstrated commitment to social justice is expected.

Desired Qualifications*

2 years live-in residence hall experience. The ability to multi-task in the face of competing demands is preferred. Administrative, budget reconciliation and supervisory experience is preferred.


The ability to be a consensus builder and make decisions in a timely manner. Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral, in working with diverse populations of students and staff. The ability to maintain open dialogue with students and staff as well as the ability to nurture an atmosphere of collegiality, inclusiveness, shared responsibility and collective accomplishment.

Salary:  12 months/$47,476 and 2 bedroom furnished apartment
