Job Summary

Children's Emergency Services (CES) is a primary entry point for children 0-17 years of age admitted to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, a verified Level One pediatric trauma center and tertiary facility with referrals from across the state. CES was separated from the Adult Emergency Department (ED) in the fall of 2011 and moved to a state of the art pediatric exclusive department of 33 beds in the new Children's hospital. CES ED Techs partner with expert pediatric emergency nurses, board certified pediatric emergency medicine faculty, and pediatric residents to provide expert family centered care for over 27,000 children who present each year with injuries and illness across the range of acuity from minor to critical care. The department provides CES Techs with an in-depth orientation, annual mandatory education, and continuing educational opportunities to include maintaining BLS, PALS, and ACLS as well as the opportunity to audit ENPC and TNCC.

Children's Emergency Services (CES) is currently seeking experienced Emergency Department Techs. Under the direction of the RN, the Emergency Department Tech will perform patient care services and specific technical duties that provide for emergent and urgent care, safety, and comfort for the pediatric patient and their family.


This is a fast-paced, challenging position in an academic environment fully committed to maintaining EXCELLENCE in family centered pediatric emergency care.


  • Providing safe and efficient care to children of all ages and pediatric specialties experiencing an emergency situation.
  • Providing Patient & Family Centered Care through collaboration with all members of the health care team in order to meet complex care requirements of the emergency pediatric population.
  • Provides assistance with emergency procedures, including but not limited to vital signs, IV insertion, venipuncture, wound care, application of orthopedic devices, 12-lead EKG, patient monitoring during diagnostic procedures, patient transport, stocking department supplies.
  • Demonstrates competence in the implementation of technical skills required for the care of the pediatric emergency patient according to UMHS policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills as evidenced by the utilization of a rapid decision making process in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates full compliance with practices in CES tech documentation while providing pediatric emergency care.
  • Assumes leadership responsibilities in teamwork and pediatric patient care delivery.
  • Identifies and assumes responsibility for one's own learning needs.

Required Qualifications*

  • Demonstrated expertise in interpersonal communication and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team atmosphere as well as the ability to accept delegated responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities as evidenced by progressive responsibility in previous work settings
  • Excellent clinical skills but not limited to IV insertion, venipuncture, and arrhythmia recognition. BLS

Desired Qualifications*

  1. Current experience as a Paramedic in the pre-hospital setting or an Emergency Department or ED Tech role of similar scope
  2. PALS
  3. ACLS

Work Schedule

Hours:  Nights:  3-12 hour shifts 7:00 pm - 7:30 am
             Rotating Weekends and Holidays
