This position is responsible for receiving, accessioning, triage, delivery and return of outside case materials for the purpose of private consultations or for patients transferring their care to the University of Michigan for continuation of care. Once the case is complete and a report is verified, the team is responsible for reconciling the blocks and slides received with the material in hand, and packaging the materials to return all case materials to the original outside institution. Last year, this group of five employees accessioned approximately 25,000 transfer/consult cases. In addition to the routine workflow, this team spends an unpredictable and abundant amount of time handling phone inquiries and troubleshooting problems with internal customers (pathologists, administrative assistants, the UM Cancer Center employees, and clinics). They are also responsible for working with outside customers (from all over the world) to obtain additional or missing information or materials.
Customers are the pathology faculty, residents and fellows, the histology laboratory staff, the ordering physicians/clinicians (both locally and globally), UMHS Cancer Center, and any other health care provider around the world who want to send materials to be reviewed at UMHS.
High school diploma and 0-2 years of experience. Applicant must posses good keyboarding skills to work at a fast pace in a production environment. Strong ability to multitask and not let tasks fall through the cracks in spite of the constant interruptions throughout the day. Good communication skills whether in person, telephone or E-mail with professional tone, correct grammar and spelling, and a positive, pleasant attitude. Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision. Applicant should possess excellent problem solving skills; able to solve problems independently as well as attention to detail to ensure correct patient assets are accessioned and returned correctly. Experience and aptitude with a variety of computer software programs, including but not limited to MiChart, Soft, Microsoft Office products and E-mail systems is a must and the ability to work as a team with diverse populations.
Candidates who posses an Associates degree, previous experience at the University of Michigan, previous experience within a Pathology setting and are proficient using Michigan Medicine software such as Soft, MiChart and the Cancer Center Tracking Tool would be highly desirable.
Full time, 40 hour position on the evening shift.
