Job Summary

The Senior Facility Manager position is responsible for the renovation planning and completion, construction management, interior design management, security issues and space planning in assigned LSA units and buildings. More than one candidate may be hired from this posting.  The target salary range is $85,000-$95,000. The actual salary offered may be higher based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities*

Strategic Initiatives - Represent the LSA Dean's Office in the planning of strategic facilities needs for the LSA spaces, and assist in the development of a college facilities master plan. Work independently to conduct high-level studies and develop recommendations for the optimal course of action.  Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

Project Management Responsibilities - Lead planning and execution of renovations across LSA spaces; track expenses and schedule assigned projects; liaison with Construction Services, central service providers, or the assigned contractor to resolve issues with assigned projects; provide estimates and an evaluation of departmental requests; Supervises and inspects field conditions and progress of work against project schedules.

Lead of Facilities Coordinators - Mentor/co-lead facilities coordinators who serve as the primary contact for LSA departments, in regards to facilities and operations issues. They monitor building mechanical systems, advise on mechanical problems and recommend solutions. Coordinators also assist in the management of facility issues as communicated by building occupants, monitor progress using U-M FMS system and follow through to satisfactory completion.

Oversight of Construction Projects - Coordinates construction activities and manages funds for all new lab and office renovations in an efficient and expedient manner. Assists in the prioritizing projects planning of construction work and reviews plans submitted by outside consultants and architects. Working with departments, consults on incoming faculty regarding new lab space and assists in the development of research space that best suits the needs of the researcher as well as the long-term interest of the department.

Facilities InfrastructureWorks closely with outlying LSA units/camps (Biological Station - Pellston, MI and Camp Davis - Jackson, WY) in the oversight and coordination of activities related to facilities, maintenance, repair, and/or renovation.  Coordinates with contractors or service providers, and evaluates various courses of action. Position may require periodic travel to Pellston, MI and Jackson, WY.

Financial and Communication Responsibilities - Inform LSA leadership on the status of projects, work requests and facilities related activities that affect their unit; prepare required budgets, proposals, and status reports.

Emergency Response Responsibilities - Respond as directed to emergencies in assigned and other LSA Buildings as directed by competent LSA and/or University authorities.  Assist assigned LSA units in the preparation and execution of unit and building specific emergency response plans.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 5-7 years of progressively responsible engineering, interior design, facility management and/or construction project management experience in an academic environment; strong project and financial management skills. 

The ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action, especially with respect to space planning and layouts, and make independent decisions on significant matters, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. 

Be able to work within a highly interactive and collaborative team environment; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and leadership skills; strong organizational skills.

Routinely requires climbing ladders to inspect building conditions; entering and traversing building mechanical room spaces with low clearances, uneven footing and vertical access requirements.

Respond in a timely manner to building emergencies across campus, including in extreme weather conditions and in buildings that have flooded, experienced a loss of electrical power or whose building systems or structure have been compromised by some emergency or unforeseen act.

Desired Qualifications*

Master’s degree in engineering, facilities management or construction management

Knowledge of U-M and LSA facilities-related policies and procedures; U-M Facility Management system (FMS), U-M Financials & Physical Resources system including asset management and space analysis

Customer relations experience and demonstrated previous success as a team member working in an academic and/or research setting preferred.
