Job Summary

The Health Information Technology Services (HITS) organization is seeking a candidate to fulfill the role of a Research Computing Consultant. This position serves in a multi-faceted role as a technician, facilitator and analyst. This position will report to the Manager of the MSIS Laboratory Research And Technology Solutions (LabRATS) team. The LabRATS Team is accountable for delivery of IT support to Michigan Medicine researchers. Essential to the success of this position will be the ability to successfully navigate and work collaboratively with the LabRATS team as well as other HITS and other campus IT support teams. HITS is a highly collaborative environment with an extraordinary scope of responsibilities and priorities. A successful candidate will be required to operate with minimal supervision, have the ability to deliver effectively with predictable results, and to be a creative yet practical problem solver.

Responsibilities*

As a Research Computing Consultant, the responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analyze workflows and products that exist in research labs and map them to products and processes that exist in other labs, even those that might be in completely different research environments. Be cognizant of opportunities for cross lab collaboration and sharing of resources. Also, recognize when new MSIS products and services are candidates to solve known lab needs.
  • Where applicable, ability to relate existing workflows to new technologies to improve researcher performance, and conversely, ability to realize when a new service can be created out of a large volume of demand for a certain technology.
  • Assist labs with risk analysis and the creation and documentation of disaster recovery plans.
  • Review, analyze, and report on the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems and develop testing strategies for improving or leveraging these systems
  • Collaborate with a variety of IT and research staff across the breadth of the organization as well as outside medical research institutions and resources.
  • Interview research staff on their varying complex work flows, and accurately relate those to IT staff for translation into a new or existing service.
  • Coordinate collaboration with MSIS, IT staff and stakeholders to provide responsive, accurate, and consistent customer support for research labs.
  • Educate and inform researchers on new technologies based on their technical knowledge and comfort level.
  • Coordinate the efforts from several “at the elbow” groups to assist in meeting specific lab project goals.
  • Educate and help researchers understand areas and degrees of data risk and security. Assist in resolving compliance and vulnerability issues.

Senior Position Requirements:

  • In depth knowledge (administration and configuration) of Windows and Linux operating systems, networking and provisioning storage on these platforms.
  • Installing and maintaining research computing software
  • A demonstrated ability to understand multiple aspects of a problem and identify appropriate solutions
  • The ability to provide solution-agnostic support by focusing on research requirements and desired outcomes
  • A desire for continuous learning of relevant technology topics
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills including one on one negotiations as well as public speaking/presentation

Intermediate Position Requirements:

  • Experience with administration and configuration of Windows and Linux operating systems, networking and provisioning storage on these platforms.
  • Installing and maintaining research computing software
  • A demonstrated ability to understand multiple aspects of a problem and identify appropriate solutions
  • The ability to provide solution-agnostic support by focusing on research requirements and desired outcomes
  • A desire for continuous learning of relevant technology topics
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills including one on one negotiations as well as public speaking/presentation

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working with the academic medical and healthcare environments.
  • Demonstrable experience in Research IT support.
  • Strong customer support skills and aptitude.
