Job Summary

The Health Information Exchange and Interoperability Team (HIXIT) is a group in the Health Information Technology and Services (HITS) organization at Michigan Medicine. Health Information Exchange and Interoperability is a strategic capability for Michigan Medicine and involves the participation and contribution of many staff across the enterprise in many different roles. The HITS HIE and Interoperability team coordinates these activities, initiatives, and commitments and ensures they are aligned with the Michigan Medicine approved HIE Strategy. Our goals are to achieve enhancements to patient safety and care delivery, improvements in population health, and reductions in overall healthcare costs.

Responsibilities*

Analysis: Perform data analysis and problem solving in a complex healthcare environment using clinical data to deliver healthcare information to transform care delivery at Michigan Medicine. This includes data selection, manipulation, integration, and analysis with data from other health organizations. Act as a liaison to internal and external customers to deliver and integrate clinical data to support quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements Gathering: Interact with members of our delivery audience (such as physicians, care managers, staff at all levels of physician organizations, etc.) to understand and define their information requirements and to create deliverables to meet those requirements. Work with partner technical teams (software vendors and internal technical teams) to understand data requirements.

Development: Collaborate with team members to develop appropriate measures specifications and report designs. Assist with defining best methods to collect, store, retrieve, and analyze data while translating business requirements into technical specification documents. Work with data architects to develop data model(s) which support the analytic requirements. Participate in data investigation and analysis with the goal of designing mapping logic between source systems. Develop programming scripts to test and understand the data and respond to questions on content and use of the data, as needed.

Communication: Communicate status of work to project leadership team members, and customers. Contribute knowledge of the healthcare industry, including knowledge of healthcare data and common issues, to team and customers. Participate in strategic planning for projects. Design and review technical solutions for new development and ongoing work. Track and manage commitments both from the HIXIT team to business partners as well as from business partners to HIXIT specifically and UMHS in general call and facilitate meetings, review commitments/contracts/SOWs, work with internal support personnel (such as Contracts Manager) to complete required business processes.

Process Development: Investigate and document project scope and requirements. Review, understand, and document the current operational processes and data sources to establish support for current and future capabilities. Develop requirement and specification documentation for data mapping and data transformation processes. Document and maintain customer relations and feedback for current and future projects. Establish workflows which leverage the information exchanged via HIE methods and technologies, to benefit the overall delivery of patient care.

Required Qualifications*

Senior Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Business Administration or equivalent degree in another field together with related experience.
  • Applicants MUST have 5+ years of experience in the healthcare industry, preferably in the state of Michigan, with either Provider organizations, Payor Organizations, HIE vendors, HIE service providers, or consulting organizations working with health systems or HIE vendors/service providers.
  • Applicants MUST have experience working with data, defining data mapping, and analyzing healthcare data.
  • Five plus years of Healthcare/Research industry experience
  • Five plus years experience in requirements gathering and data analysis
  • Three plus years experience resolving complex integration issues involving multiple technologies and business areas
  • Demonstrated technical design and development skills.
  • Familiarity with analytic tools, business intelligence tools, and statistical packages.
  • Experience in implementing healthcare solutions; experience with establishing and changing existing clinical workflows is preferred.
  • Experience with understanding and documenting workflows and clinical processes, as well as creating data-driven solutions to support these processes.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and other healthcare information regulations and requirements.
  • Solid and effective written, interpersonal, oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work effectively on a team.
  • Willingness and strong aptitude to learn new technologies and assume increasing responsibilities.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic development environment and adjust to changing priorities, processes, and project plans.

Intermediate Position Requirements:

  • Understanding of various data model types (relational, dimensional, etc).
  • Knowledge of the UM computing environment.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate meetings with diverse participants.
