Job Summary

The Biosciences Group at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute is seeking a full-time electronics technician to join a multidisciplinary team of seven faculty and over 20 full-time staff members focused on improving occupant protection and accommodation in passenger and military vehicle through biomechanics research.

**Note** This is a 1-year TERM appointment.  The TERM position includes the possibility of permanent employment based on project support.

Responsibilities*

  • Accurately machine and fabricate complex mechanical assemblies and test devices from engineering drawings or concept sketches. Develop and implement in consultation with lab supervisor and/or project engineers mechanical apparatus and specialized equipment for use in experimental research and testing.
  • Fabricate, calibrate, and install, prototype electronic instrumentation, control systems and signal conditioning circuits for resistive bridge and piezoelectronic transducers. Facilitate the calibration of equipment and instrumentation and maintain records. Document test and calibration methods.
  • Prepare complex mechanical and electrical schematics for equipment used in signal conditioning and perform highly specialized electronics work with delicate transducers, strain gages and load cells.
  • Maintain and set up equipment, instrumentation, test components, and laboratory spaces in support of biomechanical testing.  Record test procedures and results.  Recommend process improvements
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical fixtures, electronics, and test equipment in a timely manner.
  • Prepare detailed schematics, wiring diagrams and electronic layout for equipment used in signal conditioning and perform highly specialized electronics work with delicate transducers, strain gages and load cells

Required Qualifications*

  • 5 or more years of relevant experience
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to operate all machine shop equipment including lathes, mills, drill presses, band saws and grinders to fabricate parts with tolerances less than one-thousandth of an inch
  • Brazing and soldering capabilities as needed for product manufacturing and fixture assembly
  • Adept in the use of all hand tools including drills, saws, files, portable power tools, wrenches, screwdrivers, and mechanics tools as need for maintenance and building of lab equipment
  • Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication tools including the Shear, Brake, Roller and forming tools
  • Proficient at MIG and TIG welding
  • Proficient at using and programming CNC machinery
  • Adept at wiring and soldering small electronic components
  • Basic proficiency with CAD software
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and operate complex equipment software

This position requires significant experience and technical skills related to both electronic and mechanical systems. The best candidate for this position will demonstrate significant skill in both areas.
