- Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Intercultural Center including staff supervision, training and evaluation and provide support for diversity initiatives as needed
- Ensure unit complies with university policies and procedures
- Demonstrate the ability to manage difficult conversations, relationships, and other challenging situations that require thoughtful and effective communication, verbal and/or written
- Demonstrate ability to assist with strategic planning and implementation within the unit
- Demonstrate responsibility for implementation of plans in accordance with supervisory direction
- Demonstrate resource management and fiscal responsibility skills
- Ensure financial resources are used appropriately and proper procedures are followed
- Prepare annual and periodic reports as needed or requested
- Conduct program marketing campaigns, promotion of events and services, while developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with campus constituents to assist in the visibility of the Center and its programs
- Serve as a recognized Campus Security Authority and reporter under the Clery Act
- Lead the development and implementation of proactive diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that support the University’s strategic plan and champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive culture under the supervision of the Vice Chancellor for Campus Inclusion and Student Life with a dotted line to the Chancellor for serving as Chairperson of Diversity Council
- Plan, organize, manage and produce programs that highlight cultural, ethnic and racial diversity within and across ethnic communities; deepen students of color and majority students’ understanding of the benefits associated with working across communities
- Create and implement a peer education program that assists in addressing campus programs, services, outreach, engagement, education and professional development of faculty, staff and students
- Partner with student organizations and other campus entities as appropriate to implement related programming;
- Plan, organize, manage and produce programs and initatives such as African American History Month, Arab American History Month, Hispanic History, Native American History Month and others that highlight cultural diversity within the campus community
- Develop and oversee implementation of initiatives that foster theoretical sound practices for leadership development around issues of diversity, race, ethnicity and social justice among students and their organizations
- Develop and implement trainings to promote cultural understanding and competency and a climate of equity and inclusion
- Provide co-curriculum experiences, training, resources for student leaders and their organizations that are grounded in good practices for identity, leadership and community development, and other areas of specialized theoretical knowledge, research, and practices
- Plan and coordinate annual Intercultural Leadership seminar (held during Spring Break)
- Inform program and policy development work with knowledge of best practices and current trends in diversity and inclusion
Communication & Collaboration
- Foster excellent communication and maintain partnerships among administrative offices, academic departments and relevant units
- Collaborates with other university programs, offices and services on matters pertaining to student equity, inclusion and diversity
- Implement an advisory board that encourages active participation in providing vision and guidance to the programming and support services of the unit
- Meet regularly with the advisory board and collaborate on creating and implementing a strategic plan for the unit
- At the Chancellor’s request, chair University of Michigan-Flint Diversity Council
- Serve as a liaison between UM-Flint and Ann Arbor campus on issues related to diversity and inclusion
- Provide excellent and timely service to students, staff, faculty, or community members seeking information on programs or activities of the unit
- Respond to inquiries, complaints or requests from students, staff, faculty and community regarding events
- Develop and implement communication strategies to promote inclusion
- Promote UM-Flint’s commitment to a climate of equity and inclusion through interaction with various external and internal stakeholders
- Foster relationships with external partners to help support the needs of students
- Work closely with Faculty Fellow(s)
Assessment & Evaluation
- Develop and implement a comprehensive departmental assessment plan including establishing key performance indicators, cohort tracking, satisfaction, evaluation and learning measures
- Develop and assess student learning outcomes; recommend modifications to programs as needed based upon student satisfaction, efficacy in meeting student needs, student learning outcomes and changes in student culture trends
- Oversees on-going evaluation of the unit’s initiatives to foster diversity, community, leadership and social justice among student communities
- Provide consultation, training and general information to students and their organization, responding effectively to the needs/concerns of students and other campus community members involved in the intercultural initiatives; advise and assist in the development of problem identification, problem solving skills, program development and leadership development
- Ensure ongoing attention to campus climate at all levels, benchmarking, and best practices with respect to diversity and inclusion
- Masters degree required (doctoral degree preferred) in student affairs, social justice education, higher education administration/leadership or relevant field.
- At least 7-10 years of experience in student affairs and/or student services, building and advancing institutional diversity and inclusion initiatives for students, staff or faculty;
- At least 5 years of experience in progressively responsible positions in student affairs including supervision of a related functional unit within student affairs.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse, underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation student populations. Sound judgment, awareness and sensitivity to the interests and concerns of these populations.
- Proven administrative and organizational skills including the ability to be flexible, creative and able to work collaboratively with others – specifically students, faculty and staff.
- A track record of engaging with a diverse set of stakeholders and a commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues to craft a common vision and direction.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and inspire students and colleagues.
- In-depth knowledge of theory and practice with regard to organizational diversity and inclusion, student development, training and change management.
- Political savviness and an ability to be astute at navigating institution’s political landscape.
- Ability to respond to politically charged or sensitive situations.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work cooperatively with others in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent written and verbal communication.
- Direct experience, understanding and deep engagement with issues impacting intercultural students and those who have experience racial and ethnic oppression.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, ideologies, including personal and social orientations.
- A record of accomplishment as a student advocate and a champion for student success in a higher education institution.
- Experience in maximizing fiscal and human resources, effective problem solving, and innovative program development with evidence of change-oriented leadership.
- Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills that encourage collaboration and cooperation.
