The motor vehicle operator's primary responsibility is to transport members of the university community in a safe and timely manner. Drivers are asked to memorize routes, timetables, street names, and buildings to effectively transport passengers to their final destination. Besides driving, operators are expected to connect with their passengers in order to provide effective communication and friendly customer service. The service area includes UM campus and select Ypsilanti locations.
Selected candidates are expected to learn both driver and dispatcher duties, as they will be scheduled for either, based on need. Dispatching includes using a multi-line phone system to take passenger requests, using a two way radio to communicate with drivers, and entering ridership data into a database/spreadsheet. On the job training will be provided.
This position is subject to random DOT drug screens.
Because of the depth of responsibility surrounding student transportation, the most desirable candidate is one who is reliable, has a professional demeanor, and the ability to learn the responsibilities of the job. Because the candidate will ultimately become a representative of his/her department, candidates must be friendly, courteous, knowledgeable about the service, and familiar with Ann Arbor and University Campus locations.
- Must possess, or obtain a Michigan Chauffeur Driver License before hire and have a good driving record.
- Must pass DOT drug screen and DOT physical.
- Must be able to work at least 3 nights per week.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of Ann Arbor campus environment and map reading skills, be dependable, and have good customer service skills.
Licensure & Certification
Must possess, or obtain a Michigan Chauffeur Driver License before hire.
Night shift, 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Must be available at least 3 nights per week.
Service operates during Fall & Winter semesters only.
