Job Summary

The University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Media and Technology Solutions Engineer to support the technological needs of the instructional media team within the Digital Education & Innovation Laboratory (DEIL), a unit of Office of Academic Innovation.

Through curricular innovation, leadership in learning analytics and personalization at scale, AI aims to shape the future of learning and redefine public residential education at a 21st century research university by unlocking new opportunities for the U-M community and learners around the world. This new position, Media and Technology Solutions Engineer, will play an integral role within DEIL. A key component of this role is the development and management of a media asset management system for DEIL. The incumbent will work closely with DEIL and AI colleagues, to develop and maintain studio infrastructure, assess and address technical issues, identify opportunities for enhancement of workflows, develop new tools and technologies to support the advancement of innovation in teaching and learning, and participate in proactively designing a work environment where digital assets and workflows support efficiency and experimentation. 


  • Management of DEIL media production computers and related systems and equipment (primarily Apple Macintosh based)
  • Needs Assessment, Planning, Development, Implementation, and Iteration of Media Asset Management System (MAMS) workflows (e.g. CatDV MAMS software product)
  • Develop MAMS user roles, groups, and workflows to support collaboration with internal and external DEIL partners
  • Develop MAMS based data driven editing time tracking system
  • Manage and maintain Storage Area Network (SAN)
  • Develop analytics dashboard for SAN
  • Manage and maintain automated ingest and multicam creation software (e.g., Tools On Air)
  • Setup and maintain media production studios, edit suites, and related technical infrastructure
  • Assess, maintain, and replace production equipment and supplies
  • Manage and administer DEIL shared and individually assigned computers and devices
  • Manage and maintain DEIL networking infrastructure
  • Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with Information Technology Services and other partners
  • Assist with development and management of DEIL internal production training courses 
  • Assist with media capture, editing, and post-production, and other media production activities
  • Assist with management of DEIL facility physical and technical infrastructure
  • Hire and supervise student technical assistants
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 5+ years experience supporting media production
  • Experience administering and troubleshooting Macintosh computers in enterprise media production and office environments
  • Ability to design, implement, and configure custom hardware and software solutions
  • Experience setting up and administering Media Asset Management systems (MAMS)
  • Experience conducting needs assessments, and developing custom MAMS workflows
  • Experience setting up custom user roles and groups for permissions control within MAMS systems
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and resolve technical issues and configurations 
  • Experience with streaming audio/video setup and technical management
  • Experience maintaining and repairing electronics and other equipment and hardware
  • Move items weighing up to 35 lbs to varying heights with or without reasonable accomodation
