Job Summary

UM-Dearborn is among the top-tier comprehensive public universities in the Midwest with nearly 10,000 students, outstanding faculty and staff as well as beautiful facilities and grounds. Ford Motor Company gave the University of Michigan approximately 200 acres, including beautiful grounds along the Rouge River in Dearborn, as well as $6 million to build the campus' first four buildings. The campus was initially established with an emphasis on cooperative education. In 1971, it became a four-year undergraduate school; with some master's level graduate programs. Since then, the campus has experienced steady growth in both enrollment and in range of programming to include undergraduate, graduate and doctoral-level programs.

Reporting to the Director of Facilities Planning, the Architect/Project Manager has responsibility for all aspects of the development and implementation of small to mid-sized capital design and construction projects and for coordinating all phases of large capital projects with campus constituents. These responsibilities include managing the project design and construction process, preparing estimates of probable cost, and assuring completion within established schedule and budgetary limits and in accordance with design guidelines and regulatory codes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be familiar with defining project scope and objectives, architectural programming, design, project development and construction management.
  • The selected candidate must have the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a customer focused environment.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and practices, and procedures in the field of architecture and facilities planning.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and regulations related to educational environments.
  • Ability to analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and make independent decisions on matters of significance.
  • Ability to set priorities; handle multiple assignments and deadlines, and to display excellent judgment while working in a flexible and professional manner.
  • Working knowledge of project budgeting, estimating, cost control and resource management.
  • Experience with higher education and professional business environments preferred.
  • Established excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate and work with all levels of constituents, while operating in a fast-paced customer service environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a part of a team.


The successful candidate will possess and apply comprehensive knowledge of design and construction management and will communicate effectively and work collaboratively with UM-Dearborn faculty and staff, all members of the Facilities Operations team, the design and construction team, and campus community. The Architect/Project Manager must effectively coordinate the activities of the design and construction project teams, providing technical and analytical guidance, demonstrating a clear understanding of the roles and functions of each team member, conducting project meetings, and providing regular project tracking and analysis. Additional responsibilities include construction site visits to monitor progress and ascertain whether phases of the construction process are in compliance with building plans and project deadlines.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor’s degree in architecture required, Registered Architect preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of design and project management experience required. 
  • Working knowledge of AutoCADD, MS Office Suite, MS Project, and Google documents.
  • In-depth knowledge of architectural standards, engineering practices, building ordinances and blueprints.
