This is a full-time two-year term appointment.

The William L. Clements Library seeks to hire a Digitization Technician to assist in a growing digitization program. The Clements collections include a large number of books, manuscripts, maps, prints, and photographs related to the subject of early American history. With increased demand for these materials to be made available online, the Library has started to digitize its collections in a systematic manner, in addition to digitizing materials upon request from researchers and library staff.
The digitization technician will work closely with the library curators and conservator to select and prepare materials for digitization, perform in-house digitization, and create descriptive metadata. The technician will assist in managing the prioritization of collections within the digitization queue. The scanning workflow includes materials for HathiTrust and the Clements Library Image Bank, reference requests, and special projects such as online exhibits and library publications.
- Assist in the selection of materials for digitization and assessment of their physical condition.
- Perform in-house digitization under supervision of curators.
- Complete post-processing functions such as color correction and cropping.
- Enter metadata for digital objects to spreadsheets.
- Prepare shipments for submission to HathiTrust or the Image Bank.
- Add URLs for digital objects to Mirlyn catalog records (MARC format) or collection finding aids (EAD format).
- Track shipments and project status in a shared Trello board and spreadsheets.
- Assist in the development and revision of workflows and documentation related to digitization.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines and track project status.
- Ability to complete detail-oriented procedures accurately and efficiently, with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with others as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Previous work experience with digitization of archival materials and/or handling of fragile and rare materials.
- Experience working with library metadata standards, image file formats, and image editing software.
- Interest in and knowledge of American history.
