Job Summary

LSA Instructional Support Services is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to support faculty, staff and students with instructional technology in the College of LSA.  Individuals in this position would also support a variety of events held on the University of Michigan’s Central Campus.

Responsibilities*

Work closely with faculty, staff and students in the Weiser Hall (and eventually in the Biological Sciences Building), as well as with the Weiser Hall Conference Coordinator, to assess and implement technology in teaching and special events.  Respond to faculty, staff and student needs, and collaborate with other ISS staff and LSAIT-IC staff to identify, develop, and implement appropriate AV technology solutions for teaching and learning.  Consult with and advise faculty and staff on development and support of strong pedagogy-based solutions for technology-enabled learning activities – particularly, in LSA Team Based Learning (TBL) Classrooms. Develop, conduct, and analyze surveys related to AV and academic technology needs (current and future).   (30%)

  • Provide consultative services for LSA Dean’s Office and Weiser Hall units; Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS), Center for Engaged Academic Learning (CEAL), International Institute (II), Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS), Center for the Study of Complex Systems (CSCS), Michigan Center for the Applied and Interdisciplinary Math (MCAIM), LSA Events and Communications Support, Center for Study of Black Youth in Context (CSBYC), Organizational Studies (OS), Barger Leadership Institute (BLI), English Language Institute (ELI), and Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science (WICS), in planning for applicable technological solutions toward attaining the units’ objectives
  • In consultation with other ISS units and Operations Manager, analyze goals and needs of the LSA Dean’s Office and Weiser Hall units to determine appropriate technological support; discern the technological needs to satisfy event objectives; communicate with other ISS units and arrange for appropriate support as needed
  • Maintain open, transparent communication within ISS on support needs for Weiser Hall events
  • Communicate effectively with patrons, coordinate requests for service, recommend new technologies, suggest best practices, and solicit feedback and suggestions for improvement
  • Recognize when to bring in ISS LTC for higher level consultation, complex planning and pedagogy

2.  Provide programmatic AV support to Weiser Hall departments and others using the special event spaces in Weiser Hall, who are engaging in emerging learning modalities including video conferencing, lecture capture and delivery systems, video streaming and webinars, and flipped, active, and TBL classroom configurations. Coordinate with units in Weiser Hall, the WH Conference Coordinator, and other ISS staff on the technical AV needs for events and on-going activities, as well as implement solutions and proactively bring ideas for AV services that would improve events and help meet their program goals. (30%)

  • Coordinate with LSA Dean’s Office Special Event Planners and DMC, as well as with departmental staff in Weiser Hall units, on their event technology and AV needs.  Bring in other support units as needed
  • Work closely with ISS Video Conferencing team, lecture capture team, and video streaming team to provide services for LSA Dean’s Office special events, Weiser Hall units, and the I.I. Centers needing video conferencing, lecture capture, video streaming, and webinars 
  • Provide reliable, high quality on-time training and support for video conference, lecture capture, video streaming, and webinar services to faculty, staff, and administrators, and students in Weiser Hall
  • Act as primary point of contact for questions and inquiries about ISS video conference, lecture capture, video streaming, and webinar services; provide guidance and make recommendations as to the most appropriate tool or service for the event or task
  • Communicate regularly with patrons in Weiser Hall about services, resources, training opportunities, new features, and emerging technologies; meet with Weiser Hall staff on a regular basis to maintain strong relationships, get regular feedback, provide updates on services, and keep up on major upcoming events
  • Address all problems in a timely manner and communicate promptly to instructors/presenters and team members about issues, options, and solutions; bring in ISS staff in on any issues and problems in order to address them a timely manner and not compromise or delay special events
  • Provide back-up assistance to ISS Operations staff on the video conferencing team, lecture capture team, and video streaming team to provide high quality, on time video services for special events held in Weiser Hall and other LSA spaces.   Provide direct classroom and event support, as necessary, with a variety of A/V and IT technologies

3. Manage AV operations in the Weiser Hall facility; both day-to-day support as well as long-term planning and preparation.  Provide functional supervision of ISS AV Operations staff as relates to Weiser events and support, supervision of ISS student temporary staff, as well as direct supervision of full-time ISS instructional support staff housed in Weiser.    Develop documentation pertaining to policies, procedures, and best practice guidelines for the use of academic technologies and AV for special events.  Provide excellent patron service by being communicative, informative, and sensitive.    (20%)

  • Provide high quality customer service to faculty and staff and other clients; communicate and consult with Weiser Hall units and event staff on technical support; and provide high quality speaker/presenter support
  • Effectively manage work of ISS staff supporting activities in Weiser Hall to provide timely, high quality services
  • Evaluate staffing level requirements to support technology needs for Weiser Hall events; analyze and implement solution based on need and complexity of event; collaborate within ISS on scheduling ISS event support staff to insure proper coverage of all events
  • Act as primary point of contact for major Weiser Hall special events, coordinate multiple ISS service areas, and communicate effectively with colleagues to deliver excellent support for ISS patrons in Weiser Hall and other supported buildings as needed by Weiser Hall units
  • Oversee video recording support for LSA Dean’s Office special events, and Weiser Hall units
  • Supervise video recording and editing staff  
  • Oversee the production and delivery of high quality video recordings in a timely manner:  includes meeting and collaborating with clients to identify requirements, options, and meet end goals
  • Insure high quality video editing within established turn-around time in the required formats for LSA Dean’s Office, Weiser Hall units, and other units to use and share videos as needed
  • Coordinate and provide consultation assistance concerning online delivery of ISS recordings and of media in general;  consult with patrons and other ISS staff to incorporate more video content and live-video events into LSA online environment
  • Coordinate with other relevant ISS staff on the development and implementation of standard video production processes to make services more efficient and prevent future issues; work to reduce turnaround time on video processing and production
  • Communicate effectively with LSA Dean’s Office, Weiser Hall units, and other ISS clients on options for recordings, requirements for online delivery, status of videos, and quality of overall experience
  • Coordinate with patrons and ISS staff regarding technology and support needs well in advance of events; ensure needs are met or reasonable alternatives are provided
  • Work with ISS Operations staff and ISS Video Production staff to implement and improve special events recordings
  • Create documentation, share knowledge, and create best practices with ISS staff, Weiser Hall staff, and others as appropriate
  • Provide thorough illustrated documentation of ISS A/V systems for Weiser staff, as a reference
  • Pro-actively research Weiser Hall event schedules and reach out to event programmers
  • Gain knowledge of and/or stay abreast of TAG and other frontline ISS supported events and activities and coordinate communication between ISS staff and event staff in Weiser Hall; proactively communicate on services provided and any potential changes to those services
  • Work with TAG and other ISS staff to continuously improve ISS services in LSA classrooms and conference rooms

4. Research and collaborate with ISS Learning Technology Consultants on current and emerging pedagogical practice in relevant instructional technologies, TBL and flipped classrooms, collaborative workspaces, and others appropriate to the higher education environment; Operationalize the support for these activities so that ISS AV Technicians are able to implement these services at scale in other classrooms in LSA. Participate in the campus instructional technology community of practice in order to collaborate on projects and project development, develop best practice standards, disseminate patterns in technology use, and coordinate training and service options for students and faculty.  Provide training and workshops.  (20%)

  • Lead ISS activities at the Weiser Hall in providing high quality service, emphasizing customer relations and pro-actively assessing technology needs with an eye toward future growth
    • Within the role of ISS understand needs and goals of the LSA Dean’s Office and Weiser Hall units for growth and outreach and how ISS support might help those goals be obtained
    • Stay abreast of resources available through ISS, the University, and other sources to enhance the efforts of LSA departments in Weiser 
  • Project manage the release of new technologies and upgrades for smooth integration with positive impact; provide appropriate levels of documentation, workshops, training, and support 
  • Coordinate with other areas of ISS to maintain, test, and prepare technology, ensuring effective, obstacle free use for all users in Weiser Hall
  • Provide training and documentation for self-serve A/V equipment and with other technologies as appropriate
  • Provide information sessions and training opportunities for patrons in the LSA Dean’s Office and Weiser Hall units
  • Coordinate technology upgrade activities in order to best meet the needs of the LSA Dean’s Office and Weiser Hall units while minimizing disruption of their activities 
  • Assist colleagues in implementation of new technology for most effective use

 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience with performance support
  • Considerable experience with and knowledge operating complex audio-visual and computer based technologies
  • Experience in operating video and data projector systems and media control systems
  • Familiarity with Macintosh and Windows operating systems
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Strong analytical skills: ability to troubleshoot equipment, connection and software problems
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • History of demonstrated strong interpersonal and positive communication skills
  • Ability to interact positively with a very diverse community of faculty, students, and staff
  • Experience and enthusiasm for customer service and helping people

Physical Requirements:

  • Move and transport objects such as projectors, screens, monitors, equipment carts, AV racks, and AV podia with weight up to 50lbs (frequency of working with the maximum weight may be up to several times a month)
  • Travel between buildings during inclement weather
  • Move cart-based equipment between buildings
