Job Summary

Be a part of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Department of Natural Sciences! We are recruiting a Director of Laboratories to manage the materials and infrastructure of the Department.  The Department of Natural Sciences currently employs 41 regular faculty (35 with PhDs), 50 Lecturers (unionized), and 11 staff members. 


The Director of Laboratories will be the leader in safety measures, SOP standardization, collaborate with campus Occupational Safety and Environmental Health OSEH, Animal Care & Use (ACU), and Facilities and Planning to provide expert guidance and technical leadership.  He/she will have an understanding regulatory requirements related to storage, transport and disposal of all laboratory wastes, and develop and implement monitoring procedures to ensure compliance with regulations, policies and procedures, and reporting requirements. 


The Director of Laboratories will play a junctional role facilitating instructional and research activities in the department's buildings including:  the Natural Sciences Building (NSB), The Science Learning and Research Complex (SLRC), Pony Barn Research Station, and the Environmental Interpretive Center (EIC).  The Director will be the primary departmental spokesperson in collaborations with Facilities and Planning in all matters pertaining to the department's physical footprint, repairs, and connection to access, faculty or staff training, shipping and receiving, security and key distribution, and other services in a safe and secure environment within the Department spaces. 


The Director of Laboratories will supervise the technical staff, Lab Managers, and work with the Directors of the EIC, Science Learning Center (SLC), and the GAM labs to establish a vision and pose an effective management team. 


The Director will also coordinate programs or campus events within the Natural Sciences buildings to ensure safety is maintained. 


Acting as a liaison between the staff and faculty, the Director will maintain chemical inventories and help faculty in questions or space utilization and modifications.  He/she will also collaborate with the first tier office staff to ensure redundancy in budgetary processes and other clerical matters. 


The Director of Laboratories will maintain an open and creative communication process in the Natural Sciences community, helping us to bridge the building safety and health with management and delivering our teaching laboratories as well as aid in the faculty research labs. In collaboration with the faculty, the Director of Laboratories will also facilitate equipment purchases and bids, be responsible for responsible purchases following university and grant sources.  Similarly, the Director will assist the Department Chair in space allocation. In short, the Director will be our "go to" person for infrastructural, purchasing, and safety issues in the Department of Natural Sciences.


The Department Chair will be responsible for the Director of Laboratories’ supervision.  In turn, the Director of Laboratories is expected to supervise the two Laboratory Managers, Laboratory Supervisor, Electrician, and the Instrument Specialist.  The Director will maintain independent judgment and discretion in the execution of his/her responsibilities as exercised within established policies and procedures.


The salary range will be based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.


Reports to:  The Natural Sciences Department Chair 

Supervises directly:  Two laboratory managers, laboratory supervisor, electrical and instrumentation specialists


Design, direct, and conduct response for hazardous material complaints, spills and animal care protocols. Oversee mitigation and site remediation plans, collaborating with all internal and external agencies as necessary.  Have a comprehensive understanding of the priorities of the Department of Natural Sciences and CASL is key to success in this position. 


Compose and submit all required waste reports for the appropriate staff from Facilities and Management, including but not limited to radioactivity, HazMat, and annual chemical reporting. Ensure data integrity and accuracy, ensuring uniformity and compliance with all pertinent regulations.


Manage supplier contracts related to warranties and contracts for instruments or services, waste operations, and oversee the repair of Natural Sciences equipment. 


Provide management and oversight on the management of the Departmental boats and passenger vans. 


Manage faculty, staff, and student entry/exit inventories and report to Campus Police and Facilities and Planning.  Will also be responsible for issuance of keys using the university-approved procedures (DAC). 


Assist in the development of a space inventory, review and delivery of policies, procedures and training related to waste, purchasing, and safety management and sustainability programs. Provide consultation regarding materials storage, transport and disposal to vendors, the administration, faculty and staff.


Develop control and cost containment measures associated with waste management, product handling and damages, spills and emergency situations.

Develop and conduct instrumentation and certification of training faculty, staff, and students.


Monitor for and advise concerning potential impacts of changes in federal, state and local rules and regulations.


Attend and present at conferences, workshops and meetings.


Work with staff to set and evaluate individual goals, develop and sustain appropriate training, identify and recommend professional development opportunities for staff members, and assign and ensure coverage of primary areas of focus.


Foster an environment for sharing information and keeping the development and external relations team and all stakeholders well informed of strategies, contacts with prospects and donors, and related activities.


Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the University of Michigan development community. Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other academic units, and across the university, to ensure synergy in our common goals and objectives.


Initiate reports, insurance claims, MSDS in the university database, conduct studies, and perform other tasks related to development at the direction of the Department Chair.                

Required Qualifications*

Excellent communications skills coupled with strong writing and presentation skills.


Demonstrates these skills in oral, written and presentation/teaching formats. 


Must possess interpersonal skills (including coaching and feedback) as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with very diverse individuals and/or teams, across disciplines, as necessary.


Works collaboratively with colleagues in a team.


Possesses a Bachelor's degree (BS) in a Science Discipline and/or Environmental Health & Safety, Hazardous Materials/Waste Management, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry or related field.


Demonstrates proficiency with web-based and traditional software for reporting and documentation. 


Has five-seven (5-7) years of experience managing HazMat or hazardous waste programs, including direct interaction with federal, state and local regulatory officials in an academic setting.


Must be familiar with MIOSHA, OSHA, DOT and compliance regulations.

Has knowledge of state and federal regulations (such as MDEQ, EPA, etc.,) along with the ability to interpret and apply regulations to diverse operations.

Desired Qualifications*

Hazardous Materials Management certification is strongly desired (CHMM or equivalent).

Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.

40-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response Operations (HAZWOPER) certification with current 8-hour refresher certification.

MS or PhD in a science related discipline

Demonstrated time management, organizational and project management skills are desired.
