Job Summary

Under the guidance of Associate Vice President, actively lead all fundraising efforts to increase support for Michigan Medicine. The Senior Director will manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects and lead a team of ten or more development staff.


Strategic Planning

  • Implement a comprehensive multi-year fund raising plan to significantly increase philanthropic support for Michigan Medicine.
  • Personally maintain a portfolio of major gift/planned giving prospects; maintain frequent contact with prospects, University leaders, and volunteers.
  • Plan systematic, appropriate and effective solicitation strategies for major and planned gift prospects.
  • Increase philanthropic support for research, translational science, faculty support and patient care for the benefit of Michigan Medicine.
  • Provide guidance for fundraising, committees and related events and activities of the following departments; Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dermatology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Pathology, Radiology, Family Medicine, Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine.
  • Provide strategic direction in partnership with key stakeholders to optimize fundraising.
  •  Lead, inspire and coordinate the efforts of the Departments of Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dermatology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Pathology, Radiology, Family Medicine, Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine.  This includes overseeing and promoting their productivity, teamwork and professional development.
  • Provide staff coaching, mentoring and professional development opportunities that increase capabilities and create an environment of engagement.
  • In conjunction with Directors and Associate Directors, create annual plans for fundraising in coordination and collaborations with Departmental Chairs, Departmental Administrative Officers, Center and Institute Chiefs and Directors, Hospital Administrators and key faculty leaders.
  • Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in Michigan Medicine and Medical School units, the Office of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University to ensure the effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Ensure collaboration among development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Michigan Medicine campaign goals.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive, timely and innovative stewardship, as well as appropriate annual fund and special gifts programs.
  • Provide guidance to Directors, Associate Directors and Gift Officers in supporting fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers.
  • Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine Development values and its unique role and the University of Michigan.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout Michigan Medicine and the University, by demonstrating leadership in the development community.
  • Coordinate and facilitate activity that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement and successful solicitations, including advising chairs, departmental heads and development colleagues on the culture, expectations and needs of medical development constituents.
  • Develop expertise in Michigan Medicine programs, representing these programs in conversations with donors. 
  • Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and life-giving potential of individual prospects. 
  • Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship. 
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the Michigan Medicine Development priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and University needs. 
  • Participate in Medical Development meetings and events as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible development experience.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Progressively responsible development experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.
  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.
  • Proven success working in a multifaceted development environment. 
  • Experience working in a complex environment similar to Michigan Medicine, with proven experience with securing $1M plus gifts.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine and mature personal style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others is necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, motivate, and mentor major gift officers and related team members.  

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a complex organization and exercise influence to achieve results.
  • Experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.
  • Experience working with donor boards.
