Job Summary

The School of Health Professions and Studies (SHPS) ( ) at the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) is seeking an Associate Dean with primary responsibility to lead faculty research mentoring, development of continuing education programming, and assist with administrative leadership of the school. This is a very positive and dynamic period in our school’s development and the Associate Dean will have an exceptional opportunity to influence the future of the School and our changing community. The Associate Dean will join a dynamic faculty committed to continued growth and advancement of undergraduate, graduate, and post-professional education.

The SHPS offers programs in public health, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiation therapy, respiratory therapy, medical laboratory sciences, and nurse anesthesia. We are growing and developing programs in occupational therapy and physician assistant to complement our health care program offerings.

Successful candidates will have an established and successful track record in teaching, research, and service sufficient to achieve tenure upon hire within the SHPS.  Key characteristics of a successful candidate include: excellent communication, networking, and relationship building skills; demonstrated ability to represent the spectrum of programs in SHPS and to advocate for all departments/programs in SHPS; experience in research and mentoring others in research and scholarly activity; record of collaborative publications, presentations and externally funded research; active involvement and commitment to promoting a work and learning environment that is diverse / multi-cultural;  demonstrated leadership and management experience; experience leading complex projects to positive outcomes; and experience in advancing department or university initiatives forward in a reasonable time frame. The Associate Dean of SHPS reports to the Dean of the SHPS and assists in coordinating the academic, administrative, and fiscal affairs of the School.

The UM-Flint is one of two regional campuses of the internationally renowned University of Michigan located in a beautiful, urban, riverfront setting. The UM-Flint student enrollment is over 8,500 students. There are approximately 516 undergraduate and 363 graduate students in SHPS. The School is housed in the state-of-the-art William S. White Building.


Primary Duties to Include:

  • Collaboratively work with the Dean and Department Directors to provide administrative leadership for SHPS as a member of the Management Team.
  • Provide leadership to SHPS faculty in research development.
  • Provide leadership to SHPS in developing continuing education programming.
  • Assist the Dean in leading school-wide professional development for faculty.
  • Assist the Dean in oversight of the tenure and promotion process.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating existing SHPS policies and procedures to insure consistency with overall University policies.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities for School expansion.
  • Assist Dean with new program development as requested.
  • Coordinate special projects as directed by the Dean, e.g. IPE efforts, diversity efforts, coordination of clinical internship contracts, etc.
  • Serve on SHPS, University, and community/professional committees as assigned by the Dean.



Required Qualifications*

Ph.D. or equivalent academic doctoral degree in health related field.

Tenure eligible within SHPS at a rank of Associate Professor or higher.

Experience in research and mentoring others in research and scholarly activity.

Record of peer reviewed publications, presentations, and externally funded research.

Evidence of collaborative projects and research efforts.

Values and participates in interdisciplinary work.

Excellent communication, networking, and relationship building skills.

Commitment to the success of SHPS students, teaching, research and service.

Active involvement and commitment to promoting a work and learning environment that is diverse / multi-cultural.

Demonstrated leadership and management experience in key areas of responsibility (i.e. budgeting, strategic planning, collaborations, assessments, and curriculum development).

Experience leading complex projects with positive outcomes.

Experience in advancing department or university initiatives forward in a reasonable time frame.
