Job Summary

Provide supervision and facilitate operations for social workers in the Emergency Departments (AES and CES), Medical Short Stay Unit, and social work staff covering the inpatient hospitals during evenings and weekends. Provide individual and group clinical supervision and case consultation according to Department guidelines. Maintain and update resource information and regularly review staff documentation. Interpret data to determine appropriate staffing levels and coordinate staff schedules. Coordinate hiring and orientation of new staff.  Complete annual performance evaluations and facilitate disciplinary action and performance improvement plans as indicated. Set agendas and facilitate staff meetings. Plan and conduct training for staff as needed.  Coordinate activities with the Social Work Manager and Associate Director, and assist with other department activities as assigned.


  • Provide clinical case consultation to staff, as well as clinical supervision, both individual and group.
  • Intervene as needed with difficult/complex cases based on experience or area of expertise.
  • Provide specialty consultation to other health care staff.
  • Complete supervisory chart audits and ensure any corrections necessary. Stay current with billing and insurance requirements for charting.
  • Assure adequate staffing by managing calendars for each ED, including planned and unplanned absences.
  • Participate in and lead quality improvement projects.
  • Oversee the Trauma Program with the ED staff and responsibilities after-hours.
  • Provide on-call assistance and supervision to AES, CES, and weekend staff.
  • Ensure and facilitate yearly competencies for staff.
  • Complete payroll and administrative tasks.

Other duties as assigned including the following:

  • Participate as a member of leadership meetings; problem solve issues related to social work practice within ED and in consultation with the Social Work Manager and Associate Director; identify performance issues and follow up with staff; insure and maintain 24 hour/7 day staffing in both EDs.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Master's degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education is necessary.
  • 5 or more years of professional medical social work is necessary.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervisory role or demonstration of leadership skills.
  • Current Clinical licensure (LMSW) to practice Social Work in the State of Michigan is required.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Hours/Week: 40 hours

General and administrative supervision is received from the Social Work Manager in the Department of Care Management.
