A total of 1, 1.0 FTE, Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.


Basic Function and Responsibility
Under physician supervision, coordinate care and long term management of patients requiring Mechanical Circulatory Support.  Investigate, develop and implement care delivery models targeted to improve patient satisfaction while increasing clinical efficiency, safety, and quality. Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks associated with patients undergoing Cardiac surgery procedures.  Complete detailed history and physicals and present pertinent data to the medical staff.  Collect and interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures and clinical studies.  Order tests and prescribe medications. Partner with the outpatient teams to develop safe, effective and efficient care coordination for this patient population;  provide education for patients, families and health care professionals;  participate in development, implementation, evaluation and outcome monitoring of the provided clinical care. 
Supervision Received
Supervision of professional nursing practice is received from the Program Manager for the Center for Circulatory Support.
Supervision for delegated medical functions is received from designated physicians.

Required Qualifications*


  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.
  • Graduate of Accredited Nurse Practitioner program as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Will consider a Family Nurse Practitioner with VAD experience.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).


  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). 



  • ACLS certification (completed by start date).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a multidisciplinary team.   
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, organization and problem solving skills.  
  • Recent demonstrated expertise performing H&P’s in the cardiac surgery population.  
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of current medical, surgical and pharmaceutical treatment modalities of the post-cardiothoracic surgical patient.   
  • Ability to function independently and partner with team members to create ideal patient outcomes.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient and family centered care.  
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking. 
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience with coordinating and managing complex and multifaceted projects.
  • Demonstrated high level of motivation to learn and participate in activities to improve patients care.  
  • Must reflect a professional appearance and demeanor and possess excellent customer service skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in program development, quality improvement, research and regulatory readiness program planning. 
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience with coordinating and managing complex and multifaceted projects. 
  • Previous experience in professional presentations and group education.  
  • Previous experience in the development of evidence based clinical protocols.  
  • At least 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in an acute care cardiac surgery setting. 
  • Previous experience with management of patients with mechanical circulatory support.
  • Previous participation in clinical research.


Work Schedule

Hours:  40 hrs/week
Shift:  Days, Monday-Friday, with evening/weekend on-call rotation.
Location: Frankel Cardiovascular Center - Center for Circulatory Support
