Job Summary

Primary role will be front-line interaction with patients and families performing clerical functions such as check-in, cashiering and check-out in a busy outpatient specialty clinic setting for the Division of Rheumatology.

Responsibilities*

Basic clerical tasks that require proper telephone technique, basic typing, computer and data entry skills. Greets patients and checks them in for appointments using MiChart. Ensure completeness of financial documents including the referring and/or Primary Care Physician information, type of visit, reason for visit, verifies patient demographics, insurance and other pertinent information. Works with insurance companies to obtain approval for clinic visits. Schedules return visit appointments in MiChart/Cadence. Schedule and coordinate patient appointments for diagnostic procedures/visits. Prepare patient itinerary and all other appropriate correspondence. Provide patient with appropriate educational and/or preparation information for procedures. Performs cashier duties. Process all professional and facility charges. Collects cash and credit card payments from patients using established guidelines to determine patient pay portion and provide receipt of payment. Provide patient with information regarding past balances and billing procedures. Reconcile clinic cash collections daily according to specific guidelines. The position also works directly with physicians and nurses regarding patient concerns, issues and questions.

Required Qualifications*

  • Consistently type with accuracy 30-35 WPM.
  • Adheres to high standards of teamwork by demonstrating adaptability, flexibility and consistently shares information and resources with others.
  • Documented history of excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Effective time management skills/consistently uses available time effectively .
  • Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal and communication skills (e.g. ability to provide and receive constructive feedback, seeks constructive approaches to resolving workplace issues).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Works well with minimal supervision.
  • Overtime may be required, with appropriate notice.
  • Ability to pass a customer service quiz and typing skill assessment.
  • Able to work in a fast paced customer friendly environment.
  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience in Ambulatory Care clinical setting as a Medical Assistant/Certified Nursing Assistant as well as a Patient Service Assistant.
  • MiChart experience.
  • Clinical data entry experience.
  • Knowledge of University and Department of Internal Medicine policies and procedures.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program or a Certified Nursing Assistant program.
  • Works well with minimal supervision and possesses strong attention to detail including proper use of grammar and accurate spelling.
  • Documented history of excellent attendance and punctuality.

Work Schedule

40 Hours/week. Full-time. Days, Monday through Friday, hours of 9:30AM-6:00PM. (Closer) Some OT may be required.

Location:  Rheumatology Internal Medicine, Area A in Taubman Center.
