The Graduate School seeks an experienced, innovative, motivated, and highly creative multimedia graphic designer to join our Communications Team. The Multimedia Designer will be responsible for creating and managing the strategic design elements that contribute to telling the Rackham story, thereby increasing, enhancing, and extending student, faculty, and alumni engagement and interaction with the Rackham brand. This position requires strong project management skills that include daily planning and execution of graphics/imagery used on our platforms. A successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The Multimedia Designer will be a collaborative team member and a source of current best practices in all aspects of the digital creative strategy, development, and execution.


Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Multimedia design: Employee will be responsible for the graphic elements and layout of all Rackham News articles, blog posts, HTML emails, digital ads, PowerPoint presentations, social-media graphics, and overall integrated marketing materials. The employee will work collaboratively on strategy and conceptualization, creation, and production.

Print Design: Employee will research and design print collateral, including event invitations, informational materials, signage, give-away items, and materials to support various Rackham initiatives. All materials must be consistent with the Rackham visual brand and come in on budget. Employee will work with external vendors and should stay on top of communication trends and new products and strategies in the market.

Photography: Art direct photography or illustrations used in all Rackham communications. Use Rackham equipment to take photos of events and article subjects as needed.

Videography: Employee will work with freelance videographers to produce a variety of short films to reach target audiences on themes including diversity, academic excellence, research and interdisciplinarity, heritage and history, donor impact, and many aspects of the graduate experience.

Required Qualifications*

A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience plus 3-5 year’s relatable experience. High level of general computer and software proficiency, with extensive experience in design and layout software, especially Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver). Website and html email design experience. A working knowledge of HTML and CSS. Demonstrable experience in working independently to create printed or online content, which includes research and project management skills. Familiarity with third-party social media tools and websites, particularly Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Excellent creative thinking skills; adaptability to new technology or communications avenues. Capability for efficiently working on multiple, diverse projects simultaneously and for creating innovative work under tight deadlines. Ability to work well and interact with a variety of Rackham clients, to identify and meet specific audience and client requirements, and to professionally receive feedback from and offer feedback to both clients and team members. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff while maintaining a professional demeanor required. Understanding and value of diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization is required. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Experience with Microsoft Office and Google tools. Strong written and verbal skills

Position requires ability to travel and transport, setup and tear-down equipment (up to 50 pounds) to locations across and off-campus as required.

Desired Qualifications*

Photography experience, with the ability to adjust to environmental factors such as lighting, stage and seating layout, architectural structures, backgrounds, and indoor/outdoor conditions. Ability to lead video projects from concept to final product, including storyboards, shot lists, interviews, permissions, filming, music selection, audio and image correction, closed captioning, and creating shorts for social media. Professional experience in public relations, advertising, or marketing-related environment is preferable. Working knowledge of digital marketing and/or IxD/UX design. Experience in a higher education setting. Familiarity with University of Michigan structure, resources, and policies.
