We are looking for a highly motivated, highly competent, individual for a full-time Research Lab Technician position in a basic research laboratory housed in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School. The applicant will participate in general laboratory maintenance along with at least half of their time on research appropriate for his/her training level. He/she will work closely with the principle investigator on research that is focused on protein-quality control systems and membrane protein biology using yeast as a model organism. Contributions to the research projects will result in co-authorship on publications from the lab.
The applicant will be closely involved in a range of research projects, and make original scientific contributions, interpret and analyze results, and suggest future directions. The successful candidate will apply their energy and expertise to cutting edge science preparing liquid culture media, agar plates, and general solutions. Culturing yeast, bacteria, and genetically manipulating these organisms. Cloning expression constructs and general molecular biology. Expressing and purifying proteins. Data documentation, data analysis, and scientific writing skills are required. Participation in lab meetings.
In addition, candidates will be expected to provide lab management support in the form of routine laboratory maintenance (instrument upkeep, preparation of stocks and buffers, ordering lab supplies, managing these supplies, dishwashing, and autoclaving), record keeping, and compliance with University of Michigan regulations.
Bachelor's degree and 1-2 year lab research experience required. Strong organizational and problem solving skills are needed along with the ability to execute specific tasks. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, ambitious individual who actively seeks opportunities to advance skills and expertise. Must demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills. While the position is for 40 hours a week, it is likely that some days you will be required to work longer hours.
Masters degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related field; 1-2 years prior experience in lab management/research.
