Duties and Responsibilities, 25% - 30% effort (75%-70% effort as regular faculty member)


  1. For the Quality Department’s program coordinating QI/PS training for physicians

The four regulated educational programs for physicians are medical student education (Office of Medical Student Education), house officer education (Office of Graduate Medical Education), continuing medical education (Office of Continuing Medical Education and Lifelong Learning), and maintenance of certification (MOC for QI Program)

  1. Lead the alignment and coordination of QI/PS training across the four programs by:
    1. Convening regular meetings of the responsible leaders to identify shared needs, develop shared initiatives, and carry out these initiatives.
    2. Determining the competencies that should be expected across levels of physician training
  2. Lead the development, coordination, and delivery of train-the-QI/PS-trainer activities that are relevant across two or more of the four programs. These activities include trainers for
    1. All teaching faculty to provide basic QI/PS mentorship in the clinical/work setting
    2. Faculty teaching formal courses in QI/PS involving curricular development, delivery, and evaluation (e.g., the AAMC Teaching for Quality train-the-trainer initiative)
    3. Faculty with some experience teaching QI/PS to help them:
      • Share and build upon each other’s experiences
      • Develop additional skills and innovations in curricula, delivery, and evaluation
  3. Meet periodically with the overall leaders of the four regulated programs (individually and as a group) to review activities occurring across programs and how efforts can be more mutually beneficial
  4. Work with and help support initiatives of individuals responsible for QI/PS training within the four regulated educational programs for physicians, meeting with key individuals and groups within the educational programs as appropriate
  5. Encourage scholarship with selected efforts
  6. Annually report on the initiatives and accomplishments of this Program


  1. For the UMHS Quality Department
    1. Align QI/PS training in the four programs with related QI/PS training and clinical activities of the Quality Department for others within the clinical enterprise.
      1. Incorporate QI/PS conceptual models, operational practices, and training activities utilized by the UMHS clinical enterprise for faculty and staff
      2. Help align QI/PS activities within the educational programs for physicians with departmental and institutional QI/PS priorities to improve safety, effectiveness, efficiency, throughput, and financial performance.
      3. Identify opportunities for interested trainees to participate in advanced QI/PS efforts and initiatives at the institutional level
    2. Help coordinate QI/PS training offered by the Quality Department by participating in relevant administrative meetings and groups within the Clinical Quality & Training unit and of the Quality Department (specific organizational groups to be specified).


  1. For other units providing QI/PS training in the clinical enterprise
    1. Align QI/PS training in the four programs with related QI/PS training and clinical activities of other units, e.g., Faculty Development, Human Resources, Nursing.
    2. Identify opportunities for interested trainers to participate in activities of other units and for trainees to participate in advanced QI/PS efforts and initiatives in other units
    3. Along with relevant individuals in the Quality Department, participate in relevant coordinating meetings across groups providing QI/PS training in the clinical enterprise.

Supervision Received

  • Directly reports to the Medical Director for Clinical Quality and Training

Supervision Exercised

  • Functionally supervises individuals leading QI/PS training for the medical student curriculum, the graduate medical student curriculum, and the MOC for QI curriculum
  • Functionally supervises individual(s) in the Quality Department providing administrative support for initiatives of this program

Required Qualifications*


  • UMHS faculty member
  • Experience in leading QI/PS initiatives at the local and departmental levels
  • Experience teaching QI/PS principles and overseeing trainees applying the principles in clinical settings
  • Some knowledge and experience regarding requirements of regulated educational programs for physicians
  • Skilled at analyzing complex problems by working with others to understand causes and develop solutions, then cogently communicate recommendations and plans to others.
  • Excellent skills with interpersonal relationships and communications.
  • Able to coordinate and manage multiple activities.
  • Experience writing and editing technical reports and manuscripts.

Desired Qualifications*


  • Experience in a departmental or institutional role responsible for developing programs to support QI/PS
  • Experience training QI/PS trainers and QI/PS to medical students, house officers, and physicians
  • Experience with educational design
  • Experience in developing methods to assess knowledge and performance
