Responsibilities*

The Government Relations web sites serve both internal university and external audiences; providing identification of the individuals involved directly in our work, updates on legislative activity and features about engagements in various campus and governmental settings.

Our office also supports and maintains a number of web sites that document the engagement of university units throughout the state and regular communications from the President about outreach efforts throughout Michigan.

The individual in this role takes on the primary responsibility for maintaining, refreshing and updating these multiple web site, helping to ensure their proper accessibility and utilization as well as occasionally preparing copy and images for inclusion on the site.

Under supervision from Director of Community Relations, the Associate designs and builds web pages using a variety of graphics software applications, techniques, and tools. Designs and develops user interface features, site animation, and special effects elements. Contributes to the design group's efforts to enhance the appeal of the organization's online offerings. Writes and maintains communications content for diverse internal and external audiences utilizing various delivery methods. Designs the website to support the organization's strategies and goals relative to external communications. The Associate monitors analytics and provides updates on site usage and offers suggestions for improving site utilization. The Associate coordinates, maintains and ensures the currency of the Michigan Outreach Directory and its database. 

Required Qualifications*

Typically requires a Bachelor degree and one to three years of experience in the area of web design. Requires knowledge of and proficiency in, web-based technologies including: Word Press, HTML code, Dreamweaver, Muze, Java script and/or similar graphic software. 

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor degree in web design.

Additional Information

The Office of Government Relations directs the University's interactions at the local, state and federal levels. This includes planning and developing the institution's response to proposed legislation; developing and maintaining effective relationships with governmental agencies and officials; and analyzing and assessing legislative, administrative and regulatory activities as they pertain to University programs, activities and operations.

Government Relations staff also facilitate faculty meetings and presentations with Congressional, Legislative and agency representatives in Washington D.C. and Lansing, and help to coordinate governmental official visits to campus. 

On the local level Government Relations personnel are engaged with city and regional entities that are impacted by the physical plant and operations of the university. Community Relations and State Outreach personnel work with local officials and organizations in Southeast Michigan and throughout the lower peninsula to explore and establish relationships that bring the resources and talents of the university to assist with addressing community interests.

Government Relations coordinates the annual Michigan Road Scholar tour which takes UM faculty across Michigan; the Wolverine Caucus which brings University faculty to the State Capitol for public policy briefings; and the office also assists in the management of the annual U-M United Way Campaign.

Under FLSA, incumbents in this position are nonexempt.
