Job Summary

HITS is seeking a permanent, experienced, highly motivated, forward thinking Senior Director for Research Applications and Advanced Computing Services. The successful candidate understands the vital importance placed on research and academic innovation in the University’s academic medical center.  Our ideal candidate will provide leadership for operational coordination and strategic guidance of the information technologies and services that support the research mission of Michigan Medicine. The Senior Director will work with leaders within enterprise IT as well as across the academic medical center and the university to ensure research IT needs are met with the highest rate of value, and satisfaction.


  • Managerial/Leadership Role

    • Advocates for the Michigan Medicine research community.

    • Informs and executes the Research IT strategy formulated by senior leadership

    • Serves as the highest-level customer relationship manager to researchers and Michigan Medicine science leadership including the Associate Dean for Research IT and Senior Dean for Research.

    • Manages a diverse team of approximately 50 IT staff, managers and Directors including research platforms, applications, integration services, EMR configuration and support, data analysts and research engagement specialists.

    • Collaborates with other Senior Directors and Staff within HITS to align research goals with technology resources, infrastructure and other services.

    • Manages the portfolio of research IT services by organizing the discrete services offered by multiple service providers, in addition to the services offered by HITS, into a well-coordinated suite of services. This will be accomplished by federating those services through common service terms and definitions, service levels, coordinated planning and change management, and research IT branding rather than full operational centralization.

    • Manages the engagement with external consultants and vendors providing support for institutional research IT initiatives.

    • Serves as liaison between HITS and Michigan Medicine informatics functions to facilitate coordination of services.

    • Develops business cases and proposals to obtain appropriate resources for various project initiatives. Identifies and resolves dependency and integration issues across the operational units in Michigan Medicine and the university. Participates in build/buy decisions and vendor product acquisitions. Collaborates to achieve proper integration across functional areas and to ensure appropriate technologies and support are in place.

    • Engages with colleges, centers, and institutes across campus to advance collaborations in biomedical research, data science, and other complementary areas of exploration relevant to Michigan Medicine researchers.

    • Advances strategies for research data life cycle to facilitating data availability, integrity, and reproducibility with the University Library and others.

    • Ensures projects are completed within time and budget requirements utilizing standard project management tools and techniques.

    • Recruits, coaches, and manages employees for success. Conducts performance reviews, develops salary planning proposals, and assists employees with career development planning and training.


  • Research/Innovation Role

    • Actively supports pre- and post-award grant processes, facilitating faculty awareness of available information technologies and services in the development of grants and effective access to needed resources for successful awardees.

    • Engages with select national and international team science and cyberinfrastructure initiatives where U-M can benefit from and contribute to the standards, tools, policies, and processes being developed.

    • Maintains currency with modern tools and methodologies for supporting the range of basic science through clinical and translational research, incorporating new approaches as appropriate.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory, compliance and billing issues related to one or more of the following areas: electronic health record-based research, administrative data health services research, prospective clinical trials, or pre-clinical science

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM discipline or related fields.

  • 10 years of experience supporting IT services in an academic or corporate research environment.

  • Experience with enterprise research application implementations, such as CTMS.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of security requirements and methods of protection for sensitive data in research IT environment.

  • Experience with advanced research computing hardware, data networking, and software architectures and applications.

  • Experience with data integration and management related to research (enterprise data warehouse, etc.).

  • Significant demonstrated knowledge and application of system design principles, project management methodologies, service management principles, organizational change management, and technology architectures for a large-scale research enterprise.

  • Demonstrated success designing and implementing and leading research-related IT projects and broad knowledge of scientific workflows.

  • Demonstrated experience with budget planning and conformance, determining project objectives and requirements, anticipating and solving problems, and developing standards and guidelines for diverse activities.

  • Demonstrated team-building skills.

  • Ability and willingness to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with faculty, staff, and students of all levels. Ability and willingness to listen.

  • Demonstrated successful performance with problem solving and coordinating and completing multiple tasks within and across departments to meet changing deadlines.

  • Demonstrated skills in researching and writing budget proposals and presenting justifications for purchase or increased resources. Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution.

  • Proven ability to be successful and work well with other leaders in a changing and ambiguous environment.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in a STEM or health-related field and ideally Terminal degree (Ph.D. and/or M.D.)

  • 10 years of large-team supervisory experience recruiting, mentoring, career development, performance management, leadership, and team building.

  • Previous success in securing and managing significant research grants.

  • Enterprise EHR (EPIC, Cerner, Allscripts etc) experience.

  • Enterprise CTMS experience (ideally Oncore, eResearch, REDCap)

  • Demonstrated knowledge supporting large grant funded initiatives and centers (e.g., CTSA, designated cancer center),

  • Recognized national expert in research computing, storage, and application capabilities.

  • Background in national scale research network infrastructure (e.g., CTSA i2b2, PCORI).


Background Screening
