Job Summary

UM-Dearborn is among the top-tier comprehensive public universities in the Midwest with 9,100 students, outstanding faculty and staff as well as beautiful facilities and grounds. UM-Dearborn was first created as the Dearborn Center of the University of Michigan in 1959. Ford Motor Company gave the University of Michigan approximately 200 acres, including beautiful grounds along the Rouge River in Dearborn, as well as $6 million to build the campus' first four buildings. The campus was initially established with an emphasis on cooperative education. In 1971, it became a four-year undergraduate school; with some master's level graduate 
programs. Since then, the campus has experienced steady growth in both enrollment and in range of programming to include undergraduate, graduate and doctoral-level programs.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn Counseling Services, a unit within Enrollment Management and Student Life, is seeking a candidate to serve in the Director's position. UM-Dearborn Counseling Services provide counseling assistance to students, faculty and staff. The multicultural, multidisciplinary, and multi-theoretical staff provides culturally competent clinical services, referral services, assessment, outreach programming, training opportunities, and participates in other Student Affairs initiatives.  The Director is responsible for the leadership and management of full and part-time licensed and license eligible staff as well as Master's and Doctorate level interns. The Director provides vision and leadership for the direction of counseling and disabilities services; develops and implements a comprehensive program that ensure the provision of professional, ethical, and quality short-term counseling, consultation, referral, education and outreach services that support student learning and development.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize high-volume workload.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide vision and leadership for the direction of Counseling Services.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive program which ensures the provision of professional and ethical counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, referral, psychological testing and psychoeducational services that support student learning and development.
  • Provide leadership in the coordination of case management and crisis intervention; and make recommendations regarding mental health issues to the Vice Chancellor of EMSL, the president, and other personnel as appropriate.
  • Obtain and maintain accreditation for the Counseling Center
  • Provide consultation with campus groups or individuals including students, faculty, staff, parents/family of students and other professionals in the community. 
  • Develop innovative methods of delivery of services based on needs of students, faculty, and staff. 
  • Develop appropriate assessment tools to measure effectiveness of programs and prepare annual reports.
  • Provide faculty, staff and student training in the area of mental health, prevention and response
  • Assist in the development of effective policies and procedures to ensure the health, safety and welfare of individual students and the campus community at large
  • Supervise, evaluate and support the professional development of clinical and support staff and graduate externs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Directors of Enrollment Management and Student Life and other units of the University to foster a comprehensive approach to the well-being of each student.
  • Oversee and implement the annual and long term budget for Counseling Services.
  • Build relationships and partnerships with campus community - within and outside of the division - to address student issues, needs, and concerns.

Required Qualifications*

  • APA-approved doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Counseling or Clinical Psychology.
  • Five (5) of years of successful post-license experience required. 
  • Licensed in the State of Michigan or licensed in another venue and is Michigan license eligible. 
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and will have experience working successfully with diverse populations and a range of issues (i.e., substance abuse, developmental issues, mental health issues, trauma, relationship issues, test anxiety, etc.).
  • Demonstrated successful experience in college/university is preferred.
