The University of Michigan is engaged in a major, presidential initiative to support and transform foundational courses - those large courses that introduce students to a major or discipline. As part of this process, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is developing a Foundational Course Initiative (FCI) that will partner teams of instructors with CRLT consultants to revise these courses to promote the success of all students. Our vision is that University of Michigan’s Foundational Courses will be nationally recognized as a leading model for teaching and learning at scale and that they will play an important role in recruiting a diverse student body, supporting them all equitably, and creating the inclusive community we aspire to for our third century. The work of the Foundational Course Initiative is highly collaborative and team-based. It provides opportunities for motivated individuals to develop new knowledge about teaching and learning through the learning laboratory provided by teaching at scale at University of Michigan.
To support the Foundational Course Initiative, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) seeks to welcome three new colleagues to focus on course design in large courses and be the foundation of a growing FCI team. In particular, we hope to welcome colleagues with work experience in at least one of the following three focus areas: 1) evidence-based instructional design in face-to-face and blended contexts, 2) assessment of student learning and learning analytics, OR 3) selection and implementation of technologies to support teaching at scale. Applicants with extensive experience will be considered for an Assistant Director title. Candidates from groups historically underrepresented in faculty development are encouraged to apply.
Developing and implementing programs and activities for the support and improvement of teaching in the large course environment
Working as part of multiple collaborative course design teams with faculty, graduate students, and other department stakeholders, along with CRLT colleagues, to revise and study large courses
Contributing expertise in one of the three focus areas (instructional design, assessment and analytics, or instructional technology) to CRLT and to the collaborative course design teams.
Collecting, compiling and/or analyzing data on the student educational experience, for publication as appropriate
Collaborating with colleagues within CRLT and across the University of Michigan to implement and support pedagogical methods appropriate for a diverse student body
A completed doctorate; college teaching experience; faculty and/or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) development experience; proven ability to collaborate in a decentralized and distributed work environment; a successful record of program development and implementation in one of the three focus areas (instructional design, assessment and analytics, or instructional technology); ability to work effectively in settings of social and intellectual diversity; strong oral and written communication skills; and sensitivity to teaching and learning needs at a major research university.
Familiarity with current trends in education at scale, particularly in the undergraduate arena. Familiarity with the literature on instructional design, assessment and analytics, and/or instructional technology. Experience designing and delivering programs for a diverse set of University-based stakeholders (undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff). Familiarity with the literature on faculty and GSI development and learning improvement, including course development and design. Familiarity with the teaching and learning environment at the University of Michigan.
