Job Summary

The University of Michigan Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training program (UM-ARRTP) invites applicants to apply for two full-time post-doctoral positions for training on methods of community based research applied to rehabilitation. The program will train post-doctoral fellows to advance the rehabilitation field in community living and participation, promoted by embracing community-based research approaches.  The UM-ARRTP is a collaborative effort among researchers at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the School of Public Health and the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. The UM-ARRTP has been successfully funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR; formerly NIDRR) since 1992.

Responsibilities*

Training in research methods will focus on diverse community based research approaches designed to capture community living and environmental, social and situational contextual factors from clinics into community. A core curriculum will complement hands-on experience of conducting a project with a community partner, using community based and patient reported outcomes and will include academic courses, seminars and workshops to train fellows in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Postdoctoral fellows will acquire knowledge and expertise in community based research; acquire advanced research skills; learn how to link research to policy; and collaborate effectively community partners to address community living and participation in people with disabilities. This program is guided by the principles of competency-based education and assessment to develop individualized training plans and the achievement of core competencies. 

Required Qualifications*

Fellowship applicants must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (e.g., PsyD, DPT) in a health related field, such as rehabilitation psychology, speech and language pathology, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, bioengineering, kinesiology, rehabilitation medicine, medical anthropology, public health, economics, etc. A commitment to research and community living and participation should be evident in the applicant’s cover letter, CV and letters of reference. Applicants must have completed all requirements of the Ph.D. degree or equivalent by January 1, 2018. 

Desired Qualifications*

Previous experience in research and/or clinical care in persons with disabilities is desirable. Applicants with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
