The Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR), a unit in the division of Student Life, promotes a safe and scholarly community in which students navigate conflict in a peaceful, socially just and self-reflexive manner. OSCR offers a spectrum of conflict resolution pathways that are educationally focused, student-driven, community owned, and restorative in nature and are adaptable to meet the needs of individuals experiencing conflict.

Job Summary

OSCR staff work in a generalist model where all are cross trained across functional areas, however, each staff member has a primary area of responsibility. The Assistant Director positions in OSCR provide day-to-day supervision of process and procedure under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Job Summary: Assistant Director (Adaptable Conflict Resolution Pathways, Educational Outreach, Strategic Partnerships, Training and Assessment)

Responsibilities include direct operational leadership and supervision of processes under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities (SSRR), including all Adaptable Conflict Resolution Pathways (such as Restorative Justice Circles, Conflict Coaching, Shuttle Negotiation, Social Justice Mediation, etc.). The role places high priority on the innovation and delivery of adaptable, educational and restorative responses to community conflict with particular attention to ensuring equity and inclusion. This role is tasked with providing a bridge, along with the OSCR Associate Director, to ensure coordinated and efficient response between the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and The Policy and Procedures on Student Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct and other forms of Interpersonal Violence. This bridge between policies includes the provision of alternative resolution options as requested and approved. Additionally, the Assistant Director is responsible for facilitating all post-separation (suspension) reintegration procedures across both policies.

This position promotes OSCR and Student Life learning outcomes, furthers student learning and development through outreach, provides leadership for OSCR program management & conflict resolution services, and provides supervision of professional, graduate, student paraprofessional staff, and volunteers. Responsibilities include education and outreach, website and technology management, high profile case management, and interdepartmental coordination/collaboration.  This position provides an OSCR point of contact (liaison) for key partners that include the University of Michigan Police Department, Wolverine Wellness, and University Housing and Residential Education. This position also ensures the effective coordination of training for professional staff, paraprofessional student staff, and external partners. This position provides oversight for the coordination of conflict resolution education and outreach.

The Assistant Director provides direct leadership for pre-fall and ongoing staff training, in-service curriculum development and delivery. Additionally, the Assistant Director coordinates workshop development and delivery within the U-M and Ann Arbor community. This role is responsible for cultivation, coordination and delivery of revenue generating on-site training, consulting and conferences that advance restorative practices in the field of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution in Higher Education.

This position requires the utilization of specialized knowledge of higher education administration, restorative justice practices, conflict resolution pathways, social justice in higher education, student development theory and practice, building coalitions and partnerships, innovative educational outreach best practices, and related content areas to deliver on the unit mission to teach peace, build trust, and promote justice.


Leadership and Supervision (30%)

  • OSCR Assistant Directors report to the Associate Director, Office of Student Conflict Resolution.
  • This role provides direct leadership with Director and Associate Director to provide leadership for the unit in fulfilling its mission to “Build Trust, Promote Justice and Teach peace” within the University of Michigan community.
  • Provides direct supervision for one Program Manager tasked with ensuring the effective coordination of all non-AOD adaptable processes, including those within the Spectrum Model of Conflict Resolution Pathway (i.e. Conflict Coaching, Restorative Justice Circles, Facilitated Dialogue, Shuttle Negotiation, etc.).
  • In coordination with the OSCR Associate director, leads efforts in effective case delegation management of requests for conflict resolution services as well as processes under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Provides coordinated, team-based, and cross unit leadership in the advancement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives at the Unit and Divisional Level.
  • Coordinates the supervision of student staff facilitators and graduate student practicum staff.
  • In coordination with the Director and Associate Director, may act as leadership designee in periods of absence.

Administration of Relevant Policy, Procedures, and Related Processes (35%)

  • Exercise leadership in the coordination of all requests for adaptable conflict resolution services, including the facilitation of restorative justice circles, facilitated dialogues, and the provision of conflict coaching.
  • Provides additional capacity for the management and coordination of student cases utilizing processes articulated in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Recommend, develop, and implement policies, procedures, program(s) and service(s) that allow students to develop knowledge of self and others (particularly with regard to developing lifelong ethical, relational, and conflict resolution-related skills), navigate their educational environment to achieve their desired outcomes, and evaluate the role they wish to play as contributing members of society in a multicultural world.
  • Manage continuous improvement in adaptable conflict resolution processes through systematically using data to inform leadership decisions (includes data gathering, best practice benchmarking, and program assessment).
  • Provides leadership for all post-suspension reintegration processes, including the coordination of the return review committee and any subsequent reintegration procedure focused on individual and community wellness and safety.
  • Effectively utilize advocate database, as necessary, to ensure accurate records and statistical information on students and programs/services.
  • Utilize relevant theory, literature, research, and best practices to facilitate conflict resolution across a spectrum of pathways and in the design, development, and implementation of various organizational initiatives. 
  • Draw upon relevant knowledge in the following areas to support student success: student development, ethical development, social identity development, leadership development, community building, social justice, restorative justice, conflict resolution theory, motivational interviewing, and related theories of human motivation, change, and development.
  • Consult with broad cross-section of institutional and community stakeholders regarding student conflict issues at large and specific student situations.
  • Work with highly sensitive, protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain student confidentiality and attend to institutional risk-management concerns.
  • Foster student learning, development, and enhanced educational experiences through direct service interventions.
  • Educate and assist students in developing abilities to reflect on their personal and ethical values and in making informed decisions about their conduct.
  • Comply with and educate others on regulations and laws related to the work of OSCR, including: FERPA, Clery, etc. This includes several UM Standard Practice Guides (Policy), such as the SPG on Discrimination and Harassment, among others.
  • Promote the highest standards of the profession in accordance with the principles, ethics, standards, and best practices of ASCA, ACPA, NASPA, and CAS.
  • Lead and serve on committees and task forces within the unit and represent the unit on Division-level or other committees, as requested.

Education, Outreach Training, and Partnership Development (25%)

  • Exercises leadership in the advancement and delivery of high-quality staff training opportunities through pre-fall training and ongoing staff in-service opportunities.
  • Provides leadership for all OSCR educational workshop development and delivery.
  • Leads unit efforts to cultivate, design and deliver external training, consultation, and conferences focused on advancing restorative practices in the field of student conduct and conflict resolution nationally.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of effective communication and outreach strategies that will build awareness of OSCR and its programs to illustrate the impact of the work on students, and position/maintain OSCR as a key player on campus with respect to conflict resolution education and services.
  • Create materials to enhance OSCR's website and social media presence. Identify ways in which the OSCR website and social media platforms may be leveraged to deliver on the unit mission.
  • Utilize current technologies and social media tools to demonstrate creativity and improve effectiveness of communications and outreach efforts. Including, written materials such as promotional brochures, press releases, newsletters, and other informational pieces.
  • Identify and advance OSCR’s efforts to strengthen and deepen cross-collaborative partnerships with current and prospective divisional and institutional stakeholders and partners to advance the OSCR mission and the priorities of Student Life.
  • May serve as a point person/liaison with other key stakeholders, including, The Program on Intergroup Relations, Dean of Students, Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA), SAPAC, UHS (Wolverine Wellness), etc.
  • Utilize knowledge and skills in program design, marketing, resource management, and group process to conduct presentations that forward unit and divisional goals to students, faculty, and student organizations associated with program(s) and service(s); e.g. conflict resolution workshops, supplemental training programs. 
  • Work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to assess current issues and concerns within the University community and develop programs, workshops, and seminars to address them.

Unit and Divisional Committee Work (10%)

  • Advance the mission and goals of OSCR and the Division of Student Life within established set of organizational values.
  • Lead and serve on committees and task forces both within OSCR and in the Division of Student Life, as requested.
  • Actively participate in the profession at local, regional, and/or national level. Including, committee work, conference presentations, and contributing to the knowledge-base of the field of student conduct and conflict resolution.

Other duties as assigned by Director and/or Associate Director.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant field of study.
  • 3+ years of professional-level experience related to position.
  • Experience working with college students in areas relevant to the OSCR Assistant Director roles and key responsibilities within a Higher Education environment.
  • Familiarity with computers and software

Desired Qualifications*

  • Familiarity for conduct database systems; particularly the Symplicity Advocate conduct software package.
  • Experience managing budgets and providing input on financial decisions.
  • Experience designing and implementing assessment efforts to inform key leadership decision-making
  • Knowledge of and experience in residence life, residential education, student conduct, or a related field within student affairs. Demonstrated commitment to educationally focused conflict resolution techniques and programs.
  • Evidence of having contributed to the field, through publications, presentations, professional involvement, and/or leadership roles in professional organizations.

Working conditions

Require some evening or weekend hours. Position requires substantial competency in conflict resolution, working with students, parents, attorneys, etc., through challenging/stressful situations and circumstances.

Physical requirements

Requires regular administrative work in a typical office setting.

Direct reports

The Assistant Director for Adaptable Conflict Resolution, Strategic Partnerships, and Training supervises up to two Program Managers and may also supervise graduate, temporary and/or paraprofessional (student) staff facilitators as needed.
