Job Summary

The Central Biorepository (CBR) is a unit of the UMMS Office of Research and funded through the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI). This initiative is fueling groundbreaking, innovative science and advancing biomedical research at the University of Michigan.  It is providing the infrastructure to help understand the genetic and cellular basis for human disease, contributing to the identification of novel biological indicators of disease for earlier detection and improved diagnosis, and advancing the creation of more efficacious medical interventions to improve patient outcomes. 

The CBR enhances the full spectrum of our research portfolio by providing a world-class, CAP accredited, standardized, safe and monitored environment for the processing, storage and distribution of high-quality normal and diseased biospecimens annotated with detailed clinical and laboratory data.  

The Biospecimen Management Group of the University of Michigan Health Information Technology and Services (HITS) supports the CBR by providing technical expertise and administrative support of the laboratory Information management system (LIMS). 

We are looking for a senior business system analyst with expertise in managing and configuring our LIMS within a Quality Management System. This knowledge is key to serving our growing customer base of biomedical researchers and the expanding needs of the CBR.

Key aspects of this position are:

  • Lead project teams through scope definition, business workflow, technical requirements, and risk analysis
  • Develop training content for new users based on their system requirement
  • Train our expanding customer base  
  • Organize and moderate user group meetings
  • Perform system testing, validation, and verification at defined intervals
  • Ensure system maintenance to prevent disruption of informatics services due to loss of hardware or software functionality
  • Maintain compliance to all regulatory standards applicable to Biorepository operations
  • Participate in system planning activities with project management, testing, support, training, and technical teams to meet project goals

Responsibilities*

  • LabVantage LIMS configuration and administration
  • Maintain an issues register for the system
  • Assist in deployment of new software versions
  • Create release notes
  • Development of custom reports
  • Mentor less experienced business systems analysts in discovering user needs and developing the ability to recommend changes to user workflows when appropriate
  • Perform analysis of the study teams’ end-user business needs
  • Create concise documentation of requirements
  • Translate requirements into proper LIMS specifications
  • Ensure system maintenance to prevent disruption of informatics services
  • Maintain compliance to all regulatory standards applicable to Biorepository operations
  • Assist the Lead System Administrator as needed to achieve the goals of the the biospecimen management team.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant research or technical field is required for this position.
  • At least five years of progressive experience in information technology business analysis.
  • Domain expertise in scientific research
  • Previous experience working in regulated environment (ex: CFR 21 Part 11, NIOSH, NIST, etc.).
  • Experience in a wide variety of business analysis techniques including interviewing, group facilitation, and logical data modeling.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Proven collaboration, delegation, management and mentoring skills
  • Understanding of laboratory processes
  • Working knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle

The ideal candidate should possess these critical competencies:

  • LIMS (LabVantage, SQL LIMS, Sample Manager)
  • SQL and PL/SQL experience
  • Oracle
