Job Summary

The Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan School of Medicine is actively recruiting for a full-time tenure track faculty member with an interest in developing novel imaging technology in Ophthalmology as an Assistant, Associate, or full Professor.  The Kellogg Eye Center is building an interdisciplinary, multimodality Ophthalmic Imaging Center of Excellence and is looking for additional research principal investigators. The Kellogg Eye Center is dedicated to enhancing quality of life by preserving and restoring vision. Our guiding principles are teamwork, caring, innovation, and integrity. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences comprises 96 faculty, 11 clinical fellows, 21 residents, and 12 postdoctoral fellows per year. This faculty represents excellence, depth and diversity with 26 research laboratories and 7 ophthalmology subspecialty clinics. They are scientifically active and have federal, non-federal and private funding. Many faculty members have secondary appointments in basic science departments, and each has a solid record of training successful and productive residents, fellows, medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduates. The department receives more than $14 million in research funding annually in 2015 with $6.8 million from the National Institutes of Health, ranking Kellogg #10 in NIH funding among eye institutions in the USA. In 2015, Kellogg ranked #6 in research output. Faculty members are nationally and internationally known and respected.

The overall scientific environment in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences provides an exceptional and state-of-the-art environment for imaging and vision research. Several laboratories are currently engaged in active novel imaging research. The Department has an NIH-funded Core Center for Vision Research, which provides an Instrument Shop Module and the state-of-the-art Morphology and Imaging Module.

Required Qualifications*

The candidate must have completed a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D. or equivalent) and demonstrated excellence in advancing the field of imaging. The required qualifications include:

·         Evidence of scholarly activity as evidenced by recent publication record in leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals

·         Evidence of excellent communication skills as evidenced by conference presentations at national and international conferences

·         Successful experience in growing a research program with the ability to obtain funding from public and private sources

·         Excellent teamwork capability with a leadership ability to create a positive, collegial atmosphere

·         Experience collaborating with other principal investigators, particularly with investigators in different disciplines and fields

·         Strong organizational skills

·         The ability to coordinate multiple tasks and manage competing priorities

Preferred candidates will also have experience:

·         Working in multidisciplinary teams composed of engineers, optics experts, scientists, and clinicians from numerous backgrounds

·         Supervising trainees at numerous levels, including undergraduate, graduate, medical school, and postgraduate levels.

·         Experience in imaging in the field of ophthalmology is preferred but not required.

This position is posted as Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor.  Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience based on the University of Michigan Medical School faculty pay scales.
