The Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for Dr. Samuel Kwon’s Laboratory. The Kwon lab studies mechanisms underlying the neuronal dynamics and plasticity of the neocortex. What are the principles underlying the operation of cortical circuits during sensory processing and learning? How do cortical circuits change in response to sensory experience?
This postdoc position is for a project focused on the role of long-range feedback projections in cortical plasticity during learning. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art microscopy for monitoring and manipulating cortical circuits in behaving mice. The ideal candidate would study the role of long-range feedback projections in cortical plasticity during learning and be willing to commit a minimum of 2-3 years to the project.
The project will focus on testing the necessity and sufficiency of top-down cortical projections for the plasticity in recipient cortical areas and for the behavioral improvement during learning. Another focus of the project is to map cortical microcircuits involved in learning using electrophysiology and optogenetics. The applicant should have experience working with rodents. The project will involve following tasks. (1) Surgically preparing mice for imaging and behavioral training. (2) In vivo two-photon calcium imaging in mice that are trained for a tactile perception task. (3) Molecular manipulation to silence specific cortical projections. (4) Analyzing imaging and behavioral datasets. (5) Performing paired recordings in brain slices. (6) Anatomical reconstruction of recorded neurons.
PhD and/or MD in neuroscience or related field.
Experience with in vivo imaging and/or slice electrophysiology is desired.
This is a one year term-limited position with a possibility of renewal. In general in LSA, Postdoctoral Research Fellow appointments are renewable annually for a maximum of three years.
