Responsibilities*

Intake: Efficiently and effectively prepares and organizes clinic exam and procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies.  Obtains and records accurate and pertinent intake information that includes preparing medical information and reports for the appointment.  Efficiently prepare the patient based either on complaint or predetermined protocol assisting the patient when appropriate.

Direct Patient Care: Assist the provider during the patient visit which could include routine procedures, ear irrigations, foot exams, collection and/or processing of specimens for either onsite testing or preparing for pick-up.  Provides nursing care as ordered such as sterile and clean dressings, urinary catheterizations, preparation and monitoring of IV infusions and administration of medications.  May provide emergency care.  Tracks clinic patient flow and identifies holdups, notifying patients if the schedule runs behind.  Prepares and assures patients are given appropriate paperwork (encounter forms, test requisitions, school or work forms, etc.).  Alerts provider or RN of any significant changes in patient’s condition.

Medication Administration: Prepares and administers all appropriate medications using the 5 rights and by written physician order.  Patient and medication given is verified using two patient identifiers prior to administration.  All medication administration is documented correctly in MiChart.  Appropriate patient information sheets are provided to the patient/caregiver.  Initiates and monitors IV infusions and may administer allergy injections. 

Telephone Management: Collects patient information for the RN or provider.  Also provides information to patient as instructed by the provider or RN.  Documents patient care and observed responses accurately and completely in MiChart.

Clinical Support Processes: Provides accurate and efficient clinical support processes that include prescription refills, test results reporting, pharmacy insurance authorization, and/or other request.  May facilitate the appointment process with other assignments such as opening and closing processes (QC testing) supply inventory and ordering (linen, medical supplies, drugs including VFC), data collection, patient calls and quality improvement and/or problem solving initiatives.

Education and Training: Maintains current competencies and mandatory training.  Attends mandatory clinic and hospital training programs.  Actively participates in clinic and/or staff meetings.  Assists in staff orientation efforts.  Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position requires moderate standing and walking as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and transferring of patients.

 

Licensure & Certification

Graduation from an approved school for practical nursing is necessary.  Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Michigan is necessary.  Successful completion of a pharmacology course in an accredited program is necessary.  This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
