Job Summary

The University of Michigan (U-M) Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OGC) provides legal counsel to U-M’s Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses. OGC is seeking an attorney who will provide legal and policy advice to the academic leadership of the University on a full range of matters related to faculty and academic affairs. The attorney will work with clients on all three campuses. He or she will have specific responsibility for providing legal advice regarding faculty personnel matters and academic collective bargaining, overseeing litigation involving faculty employment, and advising on issues of shared governance, tenure, and academic freedom, and other matters as they arise.


  1. Provide legal advice and counsel to the Provosts’ Offices, deans, department chairs, and others regarding faculty personnel matters, including but not limited to recruitment,performance management, discipline, and dismissal.
  2. Advise clients on appropriate due process.
  3. Negotiate successful resolution of disputes, including through the negotiation of settlement agreements.
  4. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with other offices to ensure prompt identification and resolution of issues.
  5. Provide legal advice and counsel on matters related to the University’s academic collective bargaining agreements.
  6. Represent the University in labor arbitrations and administrative agency proceedings.
  7. Represent the University in litigation, or supervise outside counsel in such representation.
  8. Provide legal advice regarding University, school/college, and department policies; draft, review, and revise same.
  9. Develop and deliver timely and relevant trainings to clients.

Required Qualifications*

  1. Experience as legal counsel in or for colleges or universities related to faculty affairs matters.
  2. At least five years of experience as an attorney.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the management of complicated, potentially sensitive issues.
  4. A commitment to the mission of higher education and public research institutions.
  5. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, complex assignments with a high degree of organization.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and clients, both internal and external.
  7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
  8. Good judgment and creative problem-solving skills.
  9. The ability to handle multiple matters simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and succeed in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
  10. Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to diversity.
  11. Collegiality and a willingness to support colleagues.
  12. Commitment to expeditious, high quality service to our clients and the dedication to work the hours it takes to meet those expectations.
  13. Integrity and a strong moral and ethical compass.
  14. Admission to the State Bar of Michigan, or eligibility for admission.
