The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) invites applications for the Hub Coach position in LSA’s new Opportunity Hub. The Opportunity Hub receives leadership from the Assistant Dean for Student Development and Career Initiatives, and reports to the LSA Dean’s Office. This exciting new initiative will help students connect their liberal arts education to their aspirations by fostering experiential opportunities and connections with alumni, employers, and the College of LSA.
The Hub Coach will deliver coaching services for LSA undergraduates, with the starting point being the diverse goals and aspirations of liberal arts students. A candidate who prizes and understands inclusivity is essential. Using the LSA Opportunity Hub model for student engagement, this position will help liberal arts students reflect on their experience to gain an understanding of their interests and potential career goals. This includes methods for helping students identify patterns and themes across their LSA education that relate to their interests, values, and goals, and make intentional connections to opportunities available through the LSA Hub, College and University to inform their next steps. The Hub Coach will place students at the center of the co-creative process of defining and preparing for success.
The Hub Coach will receive leadership from the Director of Student Engagement, and collaborate closely with the Opportunity Hub operations, internships, alumni and employer, and learning teams. This role will also consult with LSA units, departments, and U-M student organizations.

Hub Coach Portfolio of Work
- Coach students on articulating the connection between their education and their aspirations with special focus on the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) career readiness competencies and the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) essential learning outcomes
- Prepare LSA undergraduates, individually and in groups, for engaged learning opportunities; work with students to co-create professional development plans. Sample coaching topics include, but are not limited to:
- Explore curricular and co-curricular opportunities
- Funding sources
- Goal setting
- Graduate school
- Hub resources and activities
- Internship and career preparation
- Interview preparation
- Networking with LSA alumni and employers
- Professional development
- Resume, cover letter, personal statement, or portfolio
- Self exploration
- Social media audit
- Work with students in developing skills to engage in a lifelong and life-wide process of connecting their education, skills, interests, and values to their next steps after Michigan
- Conduct one-on-one appointments through scheduled and drop-in meetings, live chats, and email exchanges with students
- Design and deliver workshops, programs, and events, virtually and in person utilizing the Hub’s active learning cycle
- Provide accurate information about university resources and programs
- Encourage students to invest fully in curricular and co-curricular opportunities
- Maintain a systematic process for monitoring students’ goal progress and provide them with feedback
- Appropriately refer students to university units and departments as needed
- Assist with the recruitment and education of students to Hub resources and services
- Identify student needs in relation to internship and alumni relationships and services; communicate findings with internship and alumni/employer teams in order to activate the Hub project development and management processes
- Identify marketing needs and solutions to publicize opportunities in collaboration with the Hub Communications Specialist
- Provide oversight for innovative programs and services that reflect student feedback
- Create, implement, oversee, and evaluate intentionally-designed, educationally-driven interactive programs
- Coach LSA undergraduates on the processes associated with career and graduate/professional school exploration and preparation
- Oversee undergraduate student interns during coaching events
- Engage undergraduate student interns in the Opportunity Hub model of professional development
- Provide support and guidance to the Opportunity Hub’s student advisory group
- Collaborate with the Opportunity Hub Learning Director to deliver workshops for a one-credit Applied Liberal Arts course, ALA 125
- Serve as a member or chairperson for Opportunity Hub committees and working groups
- Represent the LSA Opportunity Hub at campus and community events
- Promote program resources and initiatives to serve internal and external audiences
- Develop and maintain liaison relationships with student organizations and LSA departments and units to connect students with the opportunities in the LSA and broader U-M communities
- Meet and communicate regularly to develop and maintain liaison relationships across LSA and U-M
- Identify and develop new opportunities to expand and facilitate engagement with LSA students, units, and departments
- Actively contribute to the Opportunity Hub’s long-range vision and model for student engagement, its implementation and growth
- Assist in implement the alumni mentorship approach in the LSA Hub
- Coordinate with Opportunity Hub Communications Specialist to promote program opportunities and resources
- Prepare reports on work activities
- Design and implement evaluation tools and processes to assess coaching success and identify areas for improvement
Professional Development: 5%
- Remain current on research and best practices related to student development, student engagement, career engagement, and coaching techniques
- Actively engage and contribute to the profession at local, regional, and/or national level
- Attend conferences and present to professional audiences
- Be an active member of related professional organizations
- Attend meetings, represent LSA interests, and participate in sub-committee partnership work within the Career Services Network, a professional network of University of Michigan Administrators
Master’s degree or equivalent experience. Demonstrated coaching, advising, mentoring, or counseling skills. Commitment to the value of the liberal arts. Strong communication skills. Exceptional presentation and facilitation skills. Ability to initiate and develop relationships with undergraduate students, staff, and alumni. Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of operations and implement changes. Demonstrated commitment to issues of equity, access and inclusion. Inviting, open, inclusive student-centered approach to coaching and leadership. Capacity to use independent judgment, diplomacy, and maintain confidentiality and privacy. Successful experience working in a collaborative, team environment. Very high level of organizational ability, including the ability to organize and coordinate a diverse workload with attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to act independently, take initiative and promote innovation. Flexibility to meet changing priorities. Strong program design skills with the ability to accomplish multiple tasks autonomously and efficiently.
At least 3 years relevant experience in academic or career coaching, advising, mentoring, and/or teaching diverse student populations. Coaching, advising, mentoring, and/or teaching experience in a university setting. Demonstrated experience with university systems, policies, and procedures.
