Job Summary

The University of Michigan Dearborn is committed to its global learning, engagement and diversity goals. Beginning in the fall of 2016 the University included Global Learning into its strategic plan Vision 2020 as part of Priority #9 – Diversity and Inclusion.

The Director of Global Engagement is a new position created to lead the implementation of the Global Learning Strategic Plan, as well as to coordinate all global education activities on campus. Strategic priorities include creating an infrastructure to support faculty leading study abroad programs, developing strategic partnerships, supporting academic affairs with incorporating global education outcomes in curricular and extra-curricular programs, and creating a system for the coordination of global events on campus. Reporting directly to the Associate Provost for Global Education, the Director of Global Engagement will work with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and international partners to promote and support global learning and engagement.

Please Note: A fraction of this position (30%) will be funded by external sources for a period of three years. While the intent is to identify internal funding to maintain a 100% appointment, there is a possibility this position may be adjusted down to 70% after three years. 


  • Play a key role in enhancing and implementing the strategic plan for Global Learning on campus.
  • Serve in an advisory and supporting role to the Global Learning Advisory Council.
  • Develop and implement campus policies and procedures for developing and organizing Study Abroad programs/experiences.
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of a plan to increasing Study Abroad opportunities in line with adopted targets.
  • Enhance the existing systems of data collection and metrics for global education activities on campus.
  • Serve as consultant and coordinator to campus partners for global and international activities and resources.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Office of the Provost.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree and relevant experience in a leadership or coordinating role in international programs.
  • Excellent communication skills and commitment to the mission of global learning.

  • Experience with setting strategic priorities and exposure to best practices in global education.
  • A successful record of working collaboratively with a multitude of campus stakeholders and outside partners to accomplish goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and mentor an effective team.
  • Record of effective collaborative work across a complex institution.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
