Job Summary

The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR) seeks a Flint Research Connector for Community Engagement Program, in partnership with Community-Based Organization Partners, Flint, MI. CE works to foster equitable, bi-directional community-university partnerships that collaborate in research and take action to address community-identified health priorities. The Flint Research Connector will primarily be responsible for guiding the partnership’s programming and strategic direction to address the water crisis in Flint. The Connector will manage a portfolio of multidisciplinary grant specific projects and partnerships in Flint. The Connector will also work to establish and leverage collaborative partnerships with community-based groups, such as faith-based, government, for-profit, and non-profit organizations focused on health improvement in Flint, MI. 


• Support leadership teams of community-academic partners on project planning, implementation, monitoring progress; and managing/coordinating, and supervising the entire range of project activities associated with the work in Flint.
• Convene the leadership teams of community-academic partners (scheduling, facilitate agenda setting, prepare meeting minutes, document decisions, coordinate refreshments, etc.) for a portfolio of special projects.
• Support the leadership teams of community-academic partners to ensure research activities are performed in compliance with IRB (if required), federal regulations/policies, and the community’s ethical standards (i.e., Community Ethics Review Board, CERB, etc.).
• Support the leadership teams of community-academic partners on coordinating day-to-day activities, achieving goals, expected outcomes and progress with the project.
• Serve as liaison to community-academic partner organizations. 
• Coordinate communication, meetings and logistics among the research and advisory committees, and ensure timely communication occurs on all aspects of the project(s).
• Support development and implementation of evaluation plan(s) specific to Flint related work and partnerships.
• Manage budget related to specific aims proposed in Flint, MI.

• Develop, in partnership with relevant stakeholders, new funding mechanisms to support research in Flint.
• Manage all aspects of this mechanism including pre- and post- award communication, implementation and evaluation, and award compliance and monitoring.

• Knowledge and experience designing multidisciplinary community-based approaches, i.e., program design, evaluation, collaboration, consensus building, team science, community planning and informed decision-making.
• Knowledge and experience with community engaged, community-based and community-based participatory research; facilitating/convening processes, and community-based/community-university multidisciplinary partnerships.
• Demonstrates strengths in networking and relationship building, knowledge of consensus decision-making processes, and understanding of the specific cultural context in their respective community environments. 
• Demonstrates involvement in community-based work in their community or areas of focus, and are able to offer insight into the barriers that separate the scientific community from the public. 
• Connects to a variety of community-based organizations (CBO), understand the health priorities of partner organizations, policymakers, and members of the community, and regularly participate in at least one local community-based coalition or group. 
• Encourages CBOs to engage in new research opportunities as they arise, often in response to new funding opportunities, and to utilize MICHR services when appropriate. 

• Collaborates in the preparation of dissemination materials for scientific and community-based audiences (e.g. manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, presentations for community town hall meetings).
• Provide reporting language and metrics for UM and federal reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor’s required in health, social science, or related field.  4-5 years of experience in a related field.  
• Proficiency in community-based research protocols with extensive knowledge of community-engaged research principles is required.  
• Demonstrated strengths in oral and written communications, research, editing, and presentation skills, as well as ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. 
• Excellent interpersonal, active listening, facilitation, consensus-building and leadership skills, as well as the ability to engage in culturally appropriate communication and outreach.  
• Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Familiarity with multiple computer software applications, including:  MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher.  
• Attention to detail and commitment to timely customer service and communication is necessary.  

Desired Qualifications*

Masters preferred in health, social science, or related field.

Two to five years of experience in health related field preferred.

Excellent public speaking experience is desired.  

Experience writing and submitting manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication is desired.
