Job Summary

The Compliance Office at Michigan Medicine promotes compliance with all laws and regulations governing billing, coding, Medicare and Medicaid, patient privacy, information security, relationships, conflicts of interest and all governmental investigations. The purpose of the Compliance program is to maximize integrity, ethical conduct and compliance with laws, rules and regulations in order to maintain institutional integrity and minimize risk of violations and penalties.

This position will work with all segments within Michigan Medicine to develop, track, and implement compliance-related projects to help satisfy regulatory requirements and meet business objectives. Success in this role will require a strong track record of successful project development and project management experience, repository experience, and a deep understanding of regulations pertaining to the health care industry, and strong organization and leadership abilities.

The Compliance Project Manager, Sr. will report to a Director in the compliance office and will initially be engaging stakeholders across Michigan Medicine to bring online and fully utilize a new centralized software repository which will house all policies, procedures, guidelines, standards, etc. across Michigan Medicine. The ideal candidate for this position will have strong project management skills, process orientation, and the ability to build collaborative interpersonal relationships.


Policies, Procedure and Guideline Online Repository

  • Lead the efforts across Michigan Medicine to implement a new online repository for policies, procedures and guidelines across Michigan Medicine in close partnership with H.I.T.S. and the Medical School by designing project charters, producing weekly and monthly project reports, and follow up with respective teams on progress.
  • Identify and analyze stakeholder business objectives and translate them into functional requirements with clearly articulated benefits; document business processes, both current and future state.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the University Standard Practice Guides (SPG) and Michigan Medicine Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
  • Proactively engage and support all areas across Michigan Medicine who have PP&G related to clinical operations or education in their adoption of this tool.  
  • Develop a plan for a phased approach to engage and incorporate additional areas.  Develop an ongoing maintenance plan once all areas are on board by facilitating regular working group meetings and additional support meetings needed to ensure the work is moving forward.
  • Partner with other leads across Michigan Medicine to develop a communication and education plan to allow those directed by PP&G’s to be made aware when online access as changed, and when updates are available to specific policies.
  • Stay appraised of industry trends and accrediting body expectations to insure our online repository is able to change as may be required.

New Hotline Software Implementation

  • Assist in customization of design and functionality for the new hotline routing and project management tool. Customization will also occur in the context of the data entered and extracted so that it yields information that is meaningful and actionable.
  • Partner with leads across the organization to assist in implementation of the software by those who conduct investigations into Hotline Inquiries
  • Oversee the data entry into the Hotline software product to ensure and enhance data integrity and reliability.
  • Prepare summary reports.
  • Update and maintain the educational resources available on the Hotline.
  • Support the UMHS Compliance Committee of the Board

Provide staffing (e.g., attend Committee meetings) and related support for the UMH Board.

Prepare board materials (e.g., summary reports; board duties tracking document), coordinate with stakeholders, monitor progress of board requests

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Eight plus years of audit, compliance, project management or risk management experience or related, preferably with a health care organization.
  • Proven track record of effective and efficient project planning and reporting (e.g., project charters, Gantt charts).
  • Understanding of corporate compliance programs including risk assessments, testing and monitoring, training, policy development, and change management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Comfortable presenting to large groups including executive leadership; uses communication strategies to engage all participants in sharing thoughts and insights; summarizes and articulates relevant information to aid in decision–making; lead effective interactions with respect, helpfulness, and cooperation.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a difficult and complex project, engage appropriate stakeholders, traverse differing perspectives and reach a successful conclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others is necessary.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to influence others without having direct accountability for them.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with Change management skills including readiness for change assessment.
  • Strong working knowledge of databases/documentation repositories.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office including Excel, PowerPoint.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures and prior experience managing staff are preferred.
  • Previous experience working in an academic health center, or similar organization.
  • Some element of technical proficiency as would be appropriate for managing a new software implementation. 
  • PMP or Lean Certification.
