Job Summary

Provide nutritional care for pediatric patients at RAHS school-based health centers in Flint, MI.  Patient ages may range from school age to young adult who are in need of nutrition services. Develop, recommend, coordinate and deliver health education programs designed to increase the awareness and knowledge of health issues on an individual, family and community basis to effect behavior change. Analyze, compare and evaluate these education programs and their corresponding outcomes.

Note:  This is a 20-hour part-time position

Organizational Relationships:

  • General supervision received from RAHS Clinical Director
  • Liaison relationship with interdisciplinary health care team for patient care populations of responsibility.
  • Peer relationships with Clinical Dietitians in work group.
  • Preceptor to Dietetic Interns and students.
  • Cooperative linkages with the community including host site, school district, community agencies, health care community, and the community at large.

Responsibilities*

Patient Care

  • Assist in identification of patients who are at risk for and/or overweight.
  • Conduct ongoing comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients.
  • Develop and implement individualized medical nutrition therapy.
  • Chart nutritional diagnosis, individualized nutrition treatment plan, follow-up documentation of patient outcomes and revisions to plan in the electronic medical record.  This communication is performed in a timely manner that is consistent with policy and procedures.
  • Follow up with families and patients verbally and/or in writing.
  • Facilitate referrals to community agencies related to weight management.
  • Recruit, facilitate and evaluate nutrition and physical activity groups.
  • Use of excel and/or SPSS to track data and evaluation reporting.
  • Measure effectiveness of nutrition interventions in reaching desired outcomes.
  • Precept dietetic interns and students as requested and feasible.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Able to work with teams to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Implement critical thinking to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and ability to accurately document patient encounters using electronic medical record systems.
  • Exhibit excellent nutrition counseling skills.
  • Able to empower and motivate others.

Required Qualifications*

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Minimum Certification:

Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Requires primary source verification.

Desired Qualifications*

Master’s degree in health education, nutrition, public health, or related field.
