A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is open in the Biofluid Mechanics Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Dr. James B. Grotberg, PhD, MD. It is supported by an NIH project focused on liquid plug flows in the lung airway tree. Liquid plug propagation, splitting at airway bifurcations, and plug rupture will be primary objectives to understand fluid stresses on the airway wall cells. The project includes collaborations with microfluidic studies of airway epithelial cells responding to plug flows and animal models of airway closure and reopening injuries.
The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for research, drafting papers, presenting at conferences and interacting with collaborators.
PhD degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics or related field is required.
Strong and demonstrated experiences in computational fluid dynamics research using non-commercial tools, and programing in a high-level language such as C/C++ and FORTRAN are desired. Experience in direct simulation of multiphase flows and fluid-structure interactions using the modern approaches such a front-tracking, VOF, level-set and immersed boundary is highly desirable. Experience in large scale parallel simulations and high-performance computing is a plus.
