A total of one (1), 1.0 FTE Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

Job Summary

Provide psychosocial and mental health services to cancer patients, families and groups as a team member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center’s PsychOncology Clinic; provide clinical and operational oversight of PsychOncology Clinic; provide education experiences for health professionals; participate in psychoncology research initiatives.  

Responsibilities*

Patient Care (85%):

  • Perform comprehensive mental status exam, psychosocial and psychiatric evaluations in the psychoncology clinic of the comprehensive cancer center.  
  • Order, conduct and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnose appropriate syndromes based on DSM-V criteria.  
  • Plan treatment in collaboration with psychoncology colleagues based on scientific principles using, but not limited to prescribing psychotherapies, cognitive therapies, behavioral therapies, patient education and referral to other psychiatric, Patient Support Service and/or community resources.
  • Assure compliance with NCCN and regulatory agency clinical care guidelines
  • Document all relevant data according to clinical and regulatory standards.  
  • Triage psychoncology referrals and perform intake assessments
  • Coordinate and lead the psychoncology case review conference

Quality Improvement and Research (10%):

  • Support Institutional goals for quality improvement; participate in quality improvement activities; systematic review of records and/or treatment plans; 
  • Support and participate in psychoncology research initiatives; incorporate research findings into practice 

Education / Professional Development (5%):

  • Participate in education of health care professionals and students; participate in professional activities; participate in psychoncology professional development.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings at the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • Supervision of professional nursing practice is received from the Ambulatory Care Nursing Supervisor in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner team.
  • Supervision for delegated medical functions is received from the Medical Director of PsychOncology.
  • Collaborative, functional supervision provided by the Cancer Center Co-Director of PsychOncology Program.

Required Qualifications*

NP: 

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. 
  • Graduate of an accredited psychiatric nurse practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).   
  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience as a certified Nurse Practitioner in a psychiatric/mental health setting including prescribing and managing psychotropic medication therapy.  
  • Minimum of 1 year clinical supervisory or leadership experience or demonstrated leadership ability; ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of others

    PA

    • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
    • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA or one of its predecessor agencies. 
    • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
    • Minimum 2 years clinical experience as a certified physician assistant in a psychiatric/mental health setting including prescribing and managing psychotropic medication therapy.  
    • Minimum of 1 year clinical supervisory or leadership experience or demonstrated leadership ability; ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of others

    NP/PA

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as measured by references and interviews. 
    • Strong commitment to patient-centered and evidence-based care
    • Demonstrated success working within a multidisciplinary team model.
    •  Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.?

    Work Schedule
