Job Summary

This postdoctoral research fellow position is with the Chertok laboratory for “Remote and Image-Guided Therapeutics” at the University of Michigan. Our laboratory develops magnetically- and acoustically-responsive biomaterials for remotely modulated and image-guided drug/gene delivery and personalized therapy. The qualified candidate will contribute to our projects focusing on stimulation of the immune system for cancer therapy through integration of biomaterial-based drug/gene delivery platforms and immunology. The postdoctoral researcher will have a unique opportunity to work at the frontier of interdisciplinary drug delivery/bio-actuation/immunotherapy research and gain experience with a broad range of experimental approaches in the field ranging from development of nano-/micro-drug-carriers to exploration of in vivo activity in animal models using bio-actuation and medical imaging modalities.

Required Qualifications*

We are looking for strongly driven and independent PhD-level scientists. Candidates must have excellent communication skills in English. A successful candidate will have one of the following types of expertise:
1)         Biomaterials/formulation scientist: A successful candidate must have a strong background in development of nano/micro-scale formulations, bioconjugation chemistry, development of analytical methods for biomaterial/formulation characterization, quantitative aptitude and a Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutics/materials engineering/bioengineering/chemical engineering or related discipline. Experience with lipid-based formulations for gene delivery, magnetically/acoustically-responsive materials and in vivo work with rodent models is a plus.
2)         Cancer Immunologist: A successful candidate must have a strong background in cancer immunology/immunotherapy including experience with rodent models of cancer and characterization of cancer immunity. Experience with ex vivo tissue analysis, including profiling of immune cell subsets using flow cytometry/flow-assisted cell sorting, isolation and culture of primary cells and immunohistochemistry is required. Experience with molecular biology/recombinant work, immunological evaluation of immunotherapies/gene therapies and in vivo small animal imaging is a plus.

The postdoctoral trainee will have access to lab-, college-, and university- wide state-of-the-art research equipment for chemical characterization (e.g. NMR, EPR, FT-IR, Mass Spectrometry), material characterization (e.g DLS, Coulter, electron microscopy), small animal imaging (e.g. ultrasound, fluorescent/bioluminescent imaging), in vivo targeting (magnetic and acoustic), cell culture and bio-analysis (e.g. fluorescent microscopy, FACS, histology).
