Job Summary

Precision Health is a new initiative within the university that will engage faculty across the entire campus in aspects of Precision Health discovery, translation, implementation and policy research. The project is in the launch phase with internal funding for three years and a goal to raise significant additional funds through the UM Development Office and the leadership of President Schlissel.  The Precision Health project will focus on a set of specific use cases as well as create a tools, data sets and services accessible to faculty to assist their individual and collective research efforts.  A key existing asset of this initiative that will be purposefully expanded is the patient cohort and associated data that Precision Health researchers will access.

The Precision Health (PH) Driector of Cohort Development is the key administrative lead driving the growth of this cohort under the direction of the faculty lead(s) for cohort development.   This individual will be responsible for managing the existing cohort recruitment team, hire as needed and will expand and manage recruitment both within the health system and at targeted external sites.  These activities may involve establishing new partnerships with other communities’/health systems, effectively overseeing recruitment activity at non-UMMS sites and effectively collaborating with leadership and staff from the UMMS office of research biorepository as well as facilitating governance processes for accessing the cohort.  Additionally, this role will transform the current MGI process to result in active engagement of participants to create a community of enrollees, establishing and tracking additional outreach and re-contact activities.

Responsibilities*

  • Primary responsibility for all operational aspects of cohort development working with PH faculty leadership and staff partners in related units
  • Lead the transition of the sample collection process to achieve CLIA-compliant capabilities allowing return of results to participants
  • Ensures staff are successful in ongoing efforts to identify and consent patients
  • Ensures continued and expanded sample collection and logistics in coordination with the UMMS Biorepository
  • Works with health system units to align and operationalize recruitment and sustain current recruitment efforts
  • Growing recruitment efforts in keeping with Precision Health goals including identification of future recruitment sites
  • Identifies necessary clinical data elements required from the electronic health record
  • Introduces novel electronic recruitment, consent, and follow up methodologies (iPhone app, website, etc.)
  • Builds relationships and interacts with non-UMMS health system entities to enrich cohort in alignment with Precision Health goals
  • Working with communications resources develops and deploys an effective participant follow-up and ongoing engagement plan
  • Tracks and manages ongoing cost of cohort development in coordination with unit financial team
  • Aids in the creation of language for grant submissions
  • Participates with key partners in overseeing governance for access to the Precision Health Cohort; manages relevant data use agreements (DUAs). 
  • Works with key partners to ensure future data access processes are user friendly, robust, and compliant with all regulatory requirements
  • Develops and Monitors intra?unit memos of understanding (MOUs) as needed

Required Qualifications*

A background in health-related science with a working knowledge of the fields of omics (genomics, proteomics, etc.) and/or bioinformatics research.  A strong working knowledge of/experience with academic research programs.  It would be expected that a candidate would have at least three years of management and leadership experience. It would be expected that a candidate would have a bachelor’s degree and 5 years of management and leadership experience.

  • Ability to work in matrix situations with multiple stakeholders.
  • Successful management and leadership skills with a track record of advancing programmatic objectives
  • Previous supervisory experience in a professional environment is required
  • Ability to work successfully in programs that span schools and colleges across the university understanding unique processes at a school/college level
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills; ability to interact with diverse individuals including PIs, participants and families, hospital staff
  • The skills needed to manage ongoing research processes, interface successfully with multiple partners and enhance these processes over time to meet recruitment goals
