Job Summary

The Michigan Data Collaborative (MDC) is a data collection, enrichment, and delivery group at Michigan Medicine in the Health Information and Technology Services (HITS) department at the University of Michigan.  We support care delivery transformation initiatives across the state, with goals to achieve improvements in population health, enhancements to patient experience and care delivery, and reductions in overall healthcare costs.

Working under direct supervision, this position will be focused mainly on the data management aspects of obtaining data from various data sources (such as payers, physician organizations, and others), assessing data quality and usability, loading it into data structures, and maintaining the integrity of the data.  This position will interact with team members and external staff in a variety of disciplines including business systems analysts, application developers, and other data architects to accomplish the goals of the assigned healthcare improvement projects.


Data management and data acquisition:

Collect, analyze, edit check, load, maintain, refresh, and extract data into data structures (databases, data warehouses, data marts).  Identify and analyze incoming data sources, assess data quality and fit for use, and define processes and procedures to load data into data structures, using the ETL tool Informatica for loading and defining processes. Conduct a variety of programming tasks including program design, program coding, debugging, and documentation for software/systems and applications programs. Work with data warehouse architects to develop ETL instructions for data feeds. Document and automates processes where feasible. Assist in continuous improvement efforts in enhancing performance and providing increased functionality.

Under general direction, is responsible for data acquisition, access analysis and design, data archiving and recovery, load strategy design and implementation. Coordinates new data development ensuring consistency and integration with existing warehouse structure.

Process Development: 

Review, understand, and document the current operational and data maintenance processes to establish support for current and future analytic and reporting capabilities. Work with project manager and Staff Specialist Lead to develop requirement and specification documentation for data mapping and data transformation processes. Conduct systems programming and support activities such as new or revised segments of processing routines. Monitor effective language codes or processing routines. Monitor effective hardware utilization, applying efficient data base management techniques. Develop details specifications for current and new operations.


Communicate status of work to project leadership and team members.  Contribute knowledge of industry, data, issues, and information across the team and to customers.  Participate in strategic planning for approved projects and research, and evaluate technical solutions for new development and ongoing issues. Develop operator and control instructions. Prepare and conduct system and programming tests which may require interfaces for diverse hardware and software.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1 to 2 Experience in collecting and loading data into data structures, including familiarity with different storage methods for data which changes over time
  • Understanding of data layouts and use of data dictionaries
  • Experience in maintaining and refreshing data loaded into data structures
  • Experience in data quality analysis and edit checking, and assessing fit for use
  • Experience developing and maintaining internal documentation and specifications for data load, test, extract, maintenance, and refresh procedures and processes
  • Experience with documenting and analyzing workflow and data management processes as well as creating solutions to support these processes
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work effectively on a team. Willingness and strong aptitude to learn new technologies and assume responsibilities

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in using SQL to query Oracle databases.
  • Experience with Health Care Data
  • Knowledge of chronic disease definitions and research.
  • Knowledge of population management, evidence-based care reporting, healthcare cost and utilization reporting, and patient centered medical home concepts.
  • Knowledge of the UM computing environment.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate meetings with diverse participants.
