The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects is seeking an Instructional Designer to join the Navigate Research Administration Professional Development Team. The Navigate Team is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of a variety of training and professional development programs focused on research administration throughout the University.
Under the direction of the Navigate Training Manager, the Instructional Designer provides support for professional development initiatives across the university, with a target audience that includes both faculty and staff.
The successful candidate will:
- work closely with both faculty and staff subject matter experts in the process of analyzing, designing, delivering, and evaluating instructional/professional development materials on a variety of topics related to research administration;
- analyze and implement novel methods of existing materials to be directed to new audience segments;
- design and develop highly effective and engaging training programs for multiple areas of need related to research administration
- create training program content to support training activities based on adult learning theory which support various learning styles and delivery methods (lecture, hands-on, videos, case studies, demonstrations etc.)
- work on various projects simultaneously while also meeting deadlines
- actively and clearly communicate with internal and external customers about training needs
- facilitate and organize training by outside experts as needed
- proactively identify training class/program improvement opportunities
- regularly update current training class/program content based on regulation, policy, guideline, SOP or general system enhancements
- maintain records of training activities and employee progress and monitor effectiveness of programs
- develop and disseminate resources, research, and information about best practices relating to research administration; maintain knowledge of new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches for potential instructional opportunities; other duties as assigned.
This position is a limited-term two-year appointment with the possibility for extension subject to budget approval.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 2 - 5 years of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of common instructional design models.
- Excellent work ethic.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize work, exercise initiative, and multitask in a time sensitive, high volume work environment.
- Strong relationship-building skills, including the ability to build consensus among a decentralized stakeholder base.
- Demonstrated working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology (e.g., Captivate, Canvas, Claro, SumTotal)
- Demonstrated skill in educational program and training creation.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and/or managing projects related to the creation of new training content using multiple delivery methods (e.g., instructor-led, e-Learning).
- Working knowledge of computers, ordinary office software suites (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), enterprise software systems, web browsers, and electronic mail programs.
- Demonstrated project and organizational skills; strong attention to detail.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong active listening skills, highly developed emotional intelligence, ability to work well as a team member, and a positive attitude.
- Skill in drafting grammatically correct, clear and concise business correspondence, and ability to proofread business correspondence with a high degree of accuracy.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Experience working with faculty and administrators on the design, development, delivery, and assessment of effective training program
- Familiarity with U-M policies and procedures related to research administration (including, but not limited to, accounting, purchasing, personnel and regulatory compliance).
- Master’s degree in instructional design or related field.
