Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies (ZLI) provides the curriculum, program initiatives, community involvement, and alumni outreach activities that deliver exceptional resources for future entrepreneurs. The Institute provides training, coaching, access to capital, competitions, and other means of significant support and resources for students to take the knowledge learned in the classroom, and development life-long entrepreneurial skills through the hands-on development of innovative new business.

Extending its reach beyond the University, the Institute plays an active role in the management of several statewide initiatives, and supports regional entrepreneurial organizations that serve as a catalyst for economic development. The Institute's outreach efforts further enhance the student learning experience through symposia, internships, entrepreneurial clubs and organizations, and alumni events that serve to provide a viable entrepreneurial network and engage the business community.

The Desai Accelerator is a joint venture between the Zell Lurie Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies at the Ross School of Business and the Center for Entrepreneurship at the College of Engineering. The Desai Accelerator is an intensive program of funding, mentorship, and resources to help early stage ventures scale and succeed. Startups are accepted in cohorts and the program culminates with a Demo Day, where each team will pitch to investors. While the accelerator is a University of Michigan supported program, applications are open to the public.

Purpose
This position provides day-to-day program management for the Desai Accelerator Program.  The position will provide exceptional customer service to staff, companies, students, mentors, and sponsors.  This position reports to the Managing Director of the Desai Accelerator.

Responsibilities*

Relationship Management

  • Initiate, cultivate and develop strong relationships with mentors, workshop leaders, investors, coaches, alumni, potential donors, founder’s dinner speakers, guest lecturers, etc. to promote the program
  • Manage relationships with sponsors and fellow University programs and departments to consult on program events and entrepreneurship initiatives
  • Serve as liaison between two main partners; the Zell Lurie Institute at Ross and Center for Entrepreneurship at the College of Engineering to share and promote the University’s/the Institute’s broader initiatives
  • Sources and evaluates companies for their fit in the program and provides feedback related to applications
  • Ensure optimal positioning of the program and promote positive public relations for the program

Program Management

  • Recruit companies, vet applications and assist the Managing Director with company selection
  • Lead key program initiatives in collaboration with partner company
  • Identify, plan, and implement outreach efforts to help bring name recognition and potential applicants to the program
  • Develop evaluation metrics for programs and establish goals to track progress
  • Lead communication and engage directly with any potential companies, community partners, and alumni with interest in the program
  • Develop, review, and update all marketing and program event materials to promote the Desai Accelerator brand
  • Engage and counsel founders on questions regarding startups, interns, operations, and programmatic elements
  • Identify gaps in programming and implement opportunities to enhance operations by continually examining the external market and other programs
  • Manage contract negotiations related to hotel and space contracts for the program
  • Commit, manage, and track funds on behalf of the University for related program events and participants
  • Represent Desai Accelerator in the local community at various recruiting/marketing events

Events Planning and Program Coordination

  • Coordination and execution of pre-program related activities- including calendar creation, program information sessions and interviews
  • Coordinate the planning and execution of logistics for events such as Demo Day, orientation, mentor onboarding, workshops, founders dinners, etc (including ordering food, setting up rooms, etc.)
  • Coordinate all communication channels including social media, advertisements, website and newsletters
  • Oversee all aspects of metric goal setting, tracking and porting, including grant management.

Intern Management

  • Establish the requirements for the internship programs on behalf of the University
  • Recruit, interview, and manage student interns, including onboarding, project loads, and pay
  • Develop criteria to evaluate internship candidates for the selection process
  • Advise management and other leaders within the University on recruiting and managing interns
  • Serve as an advisor and manage expectations to student interns as they navigate a professional work setting
  • Manage the internship fund
  • Identify recruitment opportunities and execute on them
  • Serve as a student liaison for the program

Administration

  • Manage calendar scheduling for mentors, talks, events, and general programming
  • Manage and maintain all office resources to ensure organizational functionality
  • Function as primary contact and representative for the program
  • Reconcile short code purchases and PCard transactions for department

Required Qualifications*

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience/Special Knowledge/Skills 

  • 5 years of related work experience
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills; strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines and consistently meet deadlines
  • Past experience managing people
  • Comfortable with minimal amounts of direction, must be able to work independently and to exercise initiative
  • Team-oriented, flexible and customer-service oriented manner
  • Significant experience in event planning and event logistics
  • Ability to deal with confidential information
  • Ability to balance priorities and to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to successfully interact with a diverse group of people
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent communication (oral, listening and speaking), diplomacy, discretion, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database applications including Google Documents

  • The person in this position occasionally moves through the facility to attend meetings/events and access files or information
