Job Summary

Rackham Graduate School seeks a part-time (20 hours per week) temporary Graduate level Program Assistant to provide assistance with the planning and coordination of the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP).

This position is for Winter 2018.

The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) at the University of Michigan is designed for outstanding undergraduate students who are underrepresented in their field of study. This program provides students with the opportunity to conduct an intensive graduate level research project with faculty and graduate students at the University of Michigan. The goal of this program is to: introduce students to and prepare them for advanced studies in a Ph.D. program at U-M; build professional and personal networks to support student’s interest in joining the academic community; and encourage students to apply to a Ph.D. program at U-M.

Late afternoon and early evening work may be required; possible weekend work may be required with advance notice.  Schedule varies based on needs of program.

The hourly pay rate is $22 per hour.

Responsibilities*

Work with professional staff in the Rackham Graduate School to assist in the planning and coordination of the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP).  Duties include but are not limited to:

Assisting the program coordinator with reviewing and revising the program application; assisting with the development of a project management platform to manage the summer programs; assisting with program recruitment efforts; facilitating communication with prospective students; assisting with processing of student applications; assisting with screening applications and preparing applications for review; assisting with the development of program evaluation tools; anticipating and resolving application problems or concerns; completing related administrative tasks such as drafting documents, editing print and digital program materials, data entry, data management, photocopying, attending weekly meetings. 

Required Qualifications*

Must be enrolled in a Rackham graduate program.

Graduate experience at the University of Michigan is required; more than one year is strongly preferred.

Previous experience in SROP or a similar summer research program is preferred.

Demonstrated experience in and understanding of program development and implementation.

Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to maintain confidentiality in matters of a sensitive and confidential nature. 

Demonstrated customer service skills

Ability to handle multiple projects with excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Strong organizational skills.

Knowledge of personal computer productivity tools including word processing, spreadsheets, project management platforms including but not limited to MBox; presentation and electronic communication, social media, and calendaring software packages. 

Ability to work as part of a team and capacity to exercise independent initiative.

Familiarity with diversity issues in higher education. Commitment to Rackham’s and the university’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Reasonable knowledge of University and departmental policies and procedures, University organization, and University protocol and governance.
